First will be introducing a number of fares increases across the city as a direct result of our recent shortfall in income, plus the fact that our management could do with a skiing trip to the Alps next summer.

FirstAdult single fares currently costing £1.00 and £1.50 will remain the same rip-off price that they've always been. However some £2.00 fares for all journeys will rise by 50p. FirstReturn fares and FirstChild and FirstConcessionary fares will also increase.

FirstDay tickets will increase to £3.50 FirstAdult off-peak, £4.40 FirstAdult peak, £2.70 FirstChild and £1.75 FirstConcession.

FirstTen, FirstWeek, FirstMonth and FirstYear tickets will also increase. The new price for the FirstWeek Bristol ticket will be £13.50 for one zone or £18.00 for two zones. Just incase you don't think we are marketing our name enough, we are called First.

More scams to make you think we're actually reducing prices

Christmas Special promotion
From Sunday 11 FirstDecember 2005 until Saturday 7 FirstJanuary 2006 we are offering our FirstCustomers a chance to purchase a FirstDay FirstGroup ticket. This ticket offers a group of up to 5 people unlimited travel throughout Somerset & Avon including FirstBristol and FirstBath for just £8.50!

FirstDay SouthWest
A FirstAdult off peak ticket was £7.00 – now £6.00! Available to purchase after 0900 Monday – Friday, all day weekends and Public Holidays.

Child Weekend FirstDay Bristol
15s and under can take advantage of purchasing a weekend FirstDay ticket at the reduced price of £2.00 available all day on Saturdays, Sundays and Public Holidays.

Zone 2 Boundary Extended
Bristol zone 2, which surprisingly has not yet been renamed FirstZone 2, has been extended to include Long Ashton village despite the fact nobody uses the buses from there thus extending the area covered by FirstDay Bristol and reducing the price of FirstWeek and FirstMonth between Long Ashton and Bristol.

No changes on these existing scams

Flat fares onFirst Rail-link service 8/8A/9/9A. Still £1.20 - BARGAIN (not)
FirstDay FirstSouthWest child, concessionary, family and adult peak tickets because nobody actually uses them
Student West FirstDay and season tickets.

And in Essex:
First, in line with all transport operators, is facing
continuing increases in the costs of fuel.
We have been working hard to absorb these costs
to try to avoid having to increase fares.
Regrettably, the combination of these increases
in the price of fuel, together with increased pensions and wage costs, means we have little alternative
but to increase fares. We know that any increase
is unwelcome and we have tried to keep the
increases as low as possible.
The revised fares will start on 11th December 2005

and cutbacks despite fare increases :?: in Colchester...

As a result of the continuing problems with traffic congestion between North Station and the town centre since the removal of bus priorities in North Hill, First regrets that it is necessary to announce changes to routes 61, 65, 67, 77 and 78 with effect from 8 January 2006 in order to improve the reliability of these services.

Service 61 will be increased to every 20 minutes and re-routed in Wivenhoe to serve Wivenhoe Rail Station.

Service 65 will operate to revised running times to improve reliability.

Service 67 will operate between Colchester Bus Station and West Mersea only and will no longer serve North Station and Colchester General Hospital. Connection facilities are available at Head Street with services 65 and 66 to North Station and service 65 to the General Hospital. The evening service after 1900 hrs will still serve North Station.

Service 77 will be withdrawn and replaced by service 61 from Wivenhoe Station.

Service 78 will operate between Brightlingsea and Colchester Head Street only. Connection facilities are available at Head Street with services 65 and 66 to North Station and service 65 to the General Hospital. The evening service after 1900 hrs will still serve North Station.

First regrets any inconvenience to its customers wishing to travel direct to North Station and the General Hospital. It is intended that if improved bus priorities are introduced in future in the town centre to the North Station corridor then these services will be restored to North Station and the hospital.

To all you people who keep sticking up for First, could you please tell me what they do well and where they do it please? Pretty please? 'cause at the moment I'm struggling to find places where they aren't cutting services whilst increasing fares and doing other stupid things too. I mean, if the service was decent, reliable etc it would be bareable, but it isn't!

£3.50 here too - they say they're going to keep it like that for a year "unless there are exceptional circumstances" - who in their right mind would beleive that?

And just to elaborate on some of the fare increases since the 'Overground' system was launched in the Potteries 3 years ago:

ShortHop - 50p -> 90p
FirstFare - £1 -> £1.30
TwoTrip - £1.80 -> £2.25 and now withdrawn with the latest increases.
FirstDay - £2.50 -> £3.50
FirstWeek - £10 -> £13

So now, if you were to buy a FirstWeek or FirstDay ticket, you will be paying more money than three years ago, but you will have less routes to choose from running less often....great value I think not.

I guess one of those gets you about 1 bus stop along? :P

And I'm guessing that is what is commonly referred to as 'a Single'#

This is getting stupid now - 'a Return?'

I thought First Essex were bad at 70p a hop/ FirstDay £2.70 but the FirstDay is also valid on Network Colchester services (who market it as Network Day and at lower prices) and generaly called a rover. These are cheap compared to those however.

Upto 1 mile....they figured out people would get a bit pissed at a bigger increase when they first introduced it. Oh, did I mention that a child discount isn't available for this fare?

Got it in one.

Sort of, it could be used as a return or for any 2 single journies.

In Manchester FirstCrappyTickets are...

FirstDay £3.00
FirstWeek £11.00
FirstMonth £35.00

No increases that I can tell, must be the fact they are Subsidised from GMPTE....

FirstDay Bristol used to be £3 (£3.60 peak).

Tomorrow, I'm off to buy £70 worth of bus tickets to use before the fares go up. All this means is that charity only gets £2 a week off me.

Oh wonderful - now Stagecoach Grimsby/Cleethorpes have adopted the same idea - they are changing the child rate to a flat fare of 50p! Which is quite high considering a 30 minuite journey used to be 27p. Ah well! :roll: ;)

Using First Bristol's average single fare based on mileage, London - Bristol Parkway would cost £150 single.

That's because they are tightly regulated. If the government had chosen the same method of deregulation as the rest of the country, you'd be getting rip-off fare increases as well.

Luckily we get the 40p flat rate until you're 16 - I get an extra year as it's counted until the end of the acedemic year when you're 16 (for once, being a year ahead has a benefit).

They used to have a "First Hop" here too but withdrew it - presumably too many people were using it and they wanted them to needlessly buy expensive tickets.

As mojo said, there is a huge disparity in the UK - in London you pay dirt cheap fares for an excellent service, yet elsewhere you pay loads for a rubbish service (provided by buses cast off from London because they were more than 2 weeks old).
