Hi all

I like Deltics and think it would be a good idea to make another (just like thay have done for Tornado and doing for the Greaslay P2 and the Patriot project)
if yes what should the name be?

+1 for what GNERman says. There's already six production Deltics in preservation, which is a considerable proportion of the original fleet of 22 locomotives. There's certainly no need for another one to join the ranks when many preserved lines are already bursting at the seams with sidings full of locomotives.

Those worthy steam projects that the OP has suggested are intended to fill gaps in locomotive classes that are no longer extant, which is a very different matter.

Not entirely sure that a brand new Deltic would ever be made. The only reason that Tornado was built is because no one thought to preserve a Peppercorn A1 but there are 6 production Deltics preserved plus the prototype DP1.
But just for a bit of fun though.
Since the Deltics were named after Regiments (Gateshead and Haymarket based machines) or Racehorses (Finsbury Park based machines)
Regiment - The Royal Anglian Regiement
Racehorse - Sheergar

I echo the above. There's no need to build a new one, using money that's scarce enough to be found in preservation when 6 are preserved.

Perhaps they could replicate the real '23rd Production Deltic', which really is DP2 (actually it might have been one of the earlier built bodies, but you get the point I am sure).

Even as a big Deltic crank, I wouldn't advocate building another. It has already taken 15 years to rebuild 'Tulyar' and it still a way off being complete. I'd rather see the prototype back in action on a preserved railway or demonstration line.

DP2 was effectively a 50 in a 55 bodyshell with extra vents wasn't it?

Could be re-created easily enough using one of the many remaining 50s and the surviving cabs from 55 008 and 55 021...

( Post not to be taken too seriously! );)

There IS one new build (sort-of) Deltic to look forward to, though, but it's much smaller than a Class 55: the Baby Deltic!

As has been said, there's no need for another Deltic to be built when 6 of the 22 built have been saved (5 of which are currently able to haul trains) as well as the prototype. What needs to be saved are the ones in very few numbers, or recreate ones which no longer exist. I look forward to the day when D8233 & D5705 haul their first trains in preservation, & hope D8568 has a better future than it did with BR!

Welcome to the forum :) It would of course be nice to see another Deltic & its a nice thought. Aside from the Baby Deltic project i cant see another Preserved Diesel class of loco being built from scratch in today's climate.

Unless i win big on the euros & we would then have 3 Warships instead of 2 :)

The money would be better spent getting DELTIC (DP1) up and running again IMO, if i ever win the euro-millions i will do it myself.

Preserved is not the same as main line operational. These magnificent examples of British engineering should be running tours, not sitting in sheds.

I don't disagree, but that's not a reason to build a brand new one. But it is a shame that 145 isn't main line operational at the moment...

Traction motor u/s I believe. Shame as there is nothing that sounds like a Whistler on full tilt.

despite the Deltic being the greatest diesel that ever has been produced or ever will be produced (fact - MUCH better than those hydraulic Western jobbies!) to build another one would be, frankly, madness! We have 6 PLUS the prototype!

Personally on the name front i would go with Coldstream Gaurds. The oldest regiment in the Army, dating from 1650 with a string of battle honours streching from Tangier in 1680 via Malplaquet, Dettingen,Talavera, Waterloo, Mons, Passchendaele, The Somme, Dunkirk, El Alamein, and more all the way through to the gulf war.

I dont know anything about the history of racing - sorry

Might join you on that one. When I win the Euro Millions I'll have a few spare million to throw into the pot.
(thats positive thinking, if you think it will happen, it will happen.

Just wondered if it was a case of mistaken identity.

It was made by the Gods of engineering at EE so not so far off.

@Deltic 1, I have a fair few Deltic pictures if you want one for your avatar PM me.
