Could TOCs take over the running of some Intercity station calls to free space up?

Such as:

Thameslink taking over EMT station calls at Wellingborough, Kettering and Corby by extending Bedford services.

Also extension of Peterborough services to Doncaster to take over calls at Grantham, Newark Northgate and Retford.

Any other potentials out there?

Thameslink to Corby has been suggested a couple of times a year for the last few years. No trains to do it.

What about the new electrical fleet for Corby - St Pancras services?
If you want to extend Thameslink you’d have to use 700s. There are no plans to do that. As I say, you are not the first to suggest this, but no one thinks it is likely.

Thameslink taking over the Corby services has been suggested a few times, but given the ongoing issues with the current timetable and the amount of stock they actually have, it doesn’t look like it’s going to happen. Given the East Midlands ITT, Corby will be retained under this franchise.

Thameslink extended from Peterborough to Doncaster is a non-starter, this section of the ECML is already congested with numerous double track running on this section, plus I don’t think commuters would be happy to see comfortable intercity trains replaced by Class 700s.

If DfT instructs them to, and the necessary infrastructure & stock is put in place.

Also extension of Peterborough services to Doncaster to take over calls at Grantham, Newark Northgate and Retford.
As an extension to the TSGN franchise? No.

Peterborough services were an extension themselves at electrification, and allowed reduced InterCity East Coast calls at Peterborough as well as elimination (under normal circumstances!) of InterCity East Coast calls at Huntingdon.

Any other potentials out there?
Fixed that for you ;)

Northern could operate regular Newcastle - Berwick services so that Inter-City operators don't have to call at Morpeth and Alnmouth. A few 323 units would do the job. (Or cascaded Class 90s on coaching stock!)

I would shove them into Edinburgh with cheap tickets to Newcastle!

Not quite extensions, but along the same lines.

EMT to drop Widnes and Northern to pick it up.

TPE to drop Garforth and Cross Gates (etc) because there’s barely enough room as there is, not to mention the 3 minute time penalty for each.

Northern already have an hourly Morpeth-Newcastle service, so Crosscountry and the TOC formerly known as East Coast must have some other reason for calling there (i know ... it's in the agreement...).

Alnmouth would probably be better off with an hourly service do wth an hourly service in place of the current higgledy-piggledy one which sees two hour gaps at some times, and three trains in half an hour at others. I don't see the advantage of Northern running this service, though, rather than one of the other operators. None of them use 323s in Newcastle, so it's going to be a pain for any of them to operate this extra service in the way you suggest.

Personally, I wonder if it will make any sense for Northern to go north of Alnmouth at all once TPE become the third operator between Newcastle and Edinburgh. Surely someone else will be able to take the calls without too much disruption, and save Northern the cost of the rolling stock and staff, and the 30-odd extra miles of route learning it they require.
