Not far at all, i'm from Newcastle :D
I was there this past Saturday! I cycled from Newcastle Central-Wallsend-Tynemouth (along a former railway line) and Tynemouth-Blyth (by the coast) and on to Cramlington (where we got lost but fortunately found the station 5 minutes before one of the rare trains that serve that station departed ;) ) (Sorry for going off-topic! ;) )

I just looked at the timetable and you're right. But we were going against the peak flow and the train after ours wasn't until 1 hour 42 minutes later.

Looked like a good place to take photos or videos though, being on a curve.
