Any reason why an off-peak return MYT to CFD should not be valid outbound via Mirfield, then GC changing at Wakefield Kirkgate, but return via Leeds?

Fares and times on the Northern website are all shown as "one change" (i.e. via Leeds) and selecting "via Wakefield" does not bring up anything different. What is "any permitted route" in this case? Thanks in advance.

For route:any permitted tickets you have mapped routes on map PD from Halifax Group (incl Sowerby Bridge) to Pontefract Group (incl Castleford.)

That certainly includes the route you want via Wakefield as well as via Leeds. ( I don't think there are any relevant negative easements.)

Maybe try trainscanbecheaper.com : they'll sell you the £7.80 off-peak day return with an itinerary going out via Wakefield (avoiding Leeds - using Grand Central between Mirfield and Kirkgate ) and returning via Leeds.

What you propose to do is completely valid on a route "Any Permitted" ticket.

Castleford is a member of Pontefract Routeing Point Group. Mytholmroyd has three associated Routeing Points, Accrington, Halifax Group and Manchester Group. OK so a Mytholmroyd to Castleford Anytime Single costs £6.40. An Accrington to Castleford Anytime Single costs £18.60, a Halifax to Castleford Anytime Single costs £5.60, and a Manchester (All Stations) to Castleford Anytime Single costs £23.50. Therefore, only Halifax Group is an appropriate Routeing Point. The only map rule for Halifax Group to Pontefract Group is DP, the relevant section of which is this:

Halifax to Pontefract.png

That means you can go in the first instance via Bradford or Huddersfield, in the latter case then by Wakefield or Leeds, then in the latter case by Wakefield or direct; if via Bradford initially from Leeds via Huddersfield and Wakfield, just Wakefield, or direct. Ergo, there are six Permitted Routes (my numbering):

1 Mytholmroyd → Bradford → Leeds → Castleford
2 Mytholmroyd → Bradford → Leeds → Huddersfield → Wakefield → Castleford
3 Mytholmroyd → Bradford → Leeds → Wakefield → Castleford
4 Mytholmroyd → Huddersfield → Leeds → Wakefield → Castleford
5 Mytholmroyd → Huddersfield → Leeds → Castleford
6 Mytholmroyd → Huddersfield → Wakefield → Castleford

Your outbound route via Mirfield is route 6 and your return via Leeds is (presumably) 1.

There is no rule that says you need to use the same Route for the outbound journey and the return (both must be Permitted, of course). Someone else will have to explain the behaviour of the booking engine.

OK thanks. Might be better to buy from ticket office at Hebden Bridge, where the car park is unlikely to be full this week, rather than the TVM at Mytholmroyd.

As the above is on the basis of an 'any permitted' ticket why should there be any problem obtaining it from the Mytholmroyd TVM?

I remember that fares Hebden Bridge to Shipley via Leeds or via Bradford Int/FS were different, I assume the "any permitted" is the higher fare via Leeds. Not sure what a TVM would have offered in this case.

For your journey there is only the ANY PERMITTED fare.
MYT-SHY has a NOT LEEDS route for obvious geographical reasons.

[/SPOILER]

The only bit missing from this explanation is that Mirfield is a member of the Huddersfield Routeing Group so it is not necessary to go into Huddersfield itself. It is fine to go Mytholmroyd → Mirfield → Wakefield → Castleford.

Everything on time today. Not many passengers on GC between Brighouse and Wakefield, as expected with the situation in London. A wet miserable day though. New station building at Castleford an improvement on what was there before.

I went on Trainsplit, chose advanced options, and specified via Mirfield for the outward journey and was offered an Off Peak Day Return (CDR).

Northern's website is only offering the fastest journey, and does not have the option to specify a via point in one direction only.
