I think that is a plunger on the right hand side of the track, it's either a plunger or treadle. In the other direction, the crossing must be automatic as the train didn't stop for it.

What normally happens on white/red light crossings is a small, trackside red light is shown when the barriers are open. When the crossing barriers are closed and/or the road lights are flashing to stop cars then the small red light at the trackside turns into a small flashing white light indicating it is safe to proceed across the crossing.
