I just wondered whether anyone on here has been successful in applying to a Network Rail graduate scheme role. Are there any tips on how to do well in the process? How is NR as an employer? Is the grad scheme useful and interesting?

I'm applying to the Operations Management scheme and have nearly completed the online application form.

    Thanks

Speaking to one of their business graduates about OHL Teams the other week, the Business team seems OK, but isn't what I know about at all tbh.

NR was just awarded best graduate employer of the year or somesuch. I gather that competition is very fierce for places though.

Assuming they are happy with your application form, the first stage is that they ask you to do an online situational judgement test.

I submitted my application for the Operations Management scheme a few weeks ago and I got an email from them last week. It basically said they are impressed by several aspects of my application form, but as the deadline hasn't closed yet they can't make any decisions. They'll let me know in due course if they still wish to pursue my application. Here's hoping! :)

Anyone got any tips for situational judgement tests? I've got through the next stage of the Network Rail grad scheme.

Not sat the tests so I can't give you detailed answer, but:

    1. Google and you will find free SJ tests. Take them and you will get an understanding of what is required in general. This is a good tip for any test if you know what you're facing.

    2. Understand what sort of situations they might be testing you on and think about what your response should be. Remember safety is paramount on the railways.

Write yourself up really well. Think through everything you do. To be honest, you have got a lot of luck on your side with the tests. They are very tough nuggets to crack.

I don't think the test went well at all tbh!
I guess I'll just have to wait and see now, but I'm not holding much hope.

Out of the running at the first hurdle :(, and I thought that was one of the better application forms I've filled in recently! I just hope I'm not doomed to a life in logistics...

There are still plenty of opportunites for employment if you dont get on a grad scheme. NR are a good employer and will spend time and money in personal development.

have a look at the careers website : http://www.networkrail.co.uk/aspx/117.aspx

There will also be LOTS of jobs to be had once the national centre opens, if you are prepapred to move to MK. It is worth registering to see what comes up: http://www.networkrail.co.uk/aspx/5939.aspx

I know how you feel. I have a feeling there are a lot more Civil Engineering type roles this year, according to some people I know at uni.

I've been invited to the assessment centre next week for operations management. Anyone else on here going on Thursday? Anyone who's been through it (or been through one for a TOC) have any advice?

    Good luck.

Once you've done it do you mind sharing your experiences? I'm penultimate year of uni so might apply next year.

Out of interest, what subject(s) are people who've got through to the assessment centre studying at uni?

I'm still waiting to hear from Network Rail, still saying "application received".

However if you're interested in working in management on the railways, look at other paths, not just graduate schemes.

I've currently worked in the industry for 20months in commercial departments and moving onto my first management position :D Considering that a graduate would take 2-3 years to move into a management position, I've actually moved up the ladder quicker along with experience from different TOC's!
