A weekly freight train service linking Barking, east of London, to Wroclaw in Poland opens this month.
DB Schenker, part of Germanys Deutsche Bahn and the UKs largest rail freight operator, said the service would run at night on the High Speed One route, the only line in the UK with high enough overbridges and wide enough tunnels to allow larger, continental-sized trains to run.
Carsten Hinne, managing director of logistics for DB Schenker Rail UK, said demand was high and the company planned to introduce several other new services on the route during 2012.
