Used the new footbridge at Slough station earlier. A big improvement on the old, tired one but it is almost as bad as getting onto platform 4 at Wolverhampton. A heck of a long trek from the rear of a southbound HST on platform 3 to the Windsor line platform, but at least there are finally lifts at the station. It's now a rather long trek from the H^C to platform 1, and probably less time-consuming to change at Edgware Road for the District line.

The new entrance/exit to/from the H&C at Paddington has helped to ease chronic congestion on the old footbridge, but it's a shame that the link could not have been directly from within the mainline station itself, rather t

Yes , slough council has kindly wasted millions of pounds on a heart of slough project . This basically means they have filled in a roundabout that had an underground pedestrian subway , demolished a covered bus station and replaced it with an open one and put a new staircase and lifts at slough train station.

the reason for all of this is because slough is near to the rowing venue of the Olympic games and the council thinks this will be a transport hub . I'm not sure what is going to happen to the thousands of extra people that try to board the 2 car train from slough to Windsor and Eton central . More importantly I'm not sure what's going to happen to them when they try to get off at the one platform station at Windsor

Windsor and Eton Central is NOT on the transport map that is supplied with the rowing tickets.
The preferred route from central London is from Waterloo to Riverside.
There are shuttle buses from Riverside, Slough and Maidenhead to Windsor Racecourse (ticket and security checks then a long walk including over a temporary river bridge.
The arrivals time window is 0530 to 0800 at the stations.

PS Works paid for out of the Olympics budget, circa £30m, much more to do with LOCOG in Canary Wharf than Slough council;) Does any one wonder why the cost of the Olympics went up so much? (about £5m estimate originally)

There's no practical way of having a direct link from within the mainline station though, because the P15/P16 footprint is completely outside the main spans. Have a look at the drawing I put up in the London Underground forum yesterday which shows the relative positions:
