Not sure. BTW if you look on twitter you can find plenty pics showing the uncovered island platforms.

Will the proposed stations at Cameron Bridge and at Leven be in the same station location as any former station that once existed there?
Paul the new station at leven from what I can research will be closer to the water either behind the Sainsbury's or just under the A 955 next to the Swimming pool. The old station site is well built over.

First bit of news for a while regarding Skelmersdale.
Grip 3 report, no doubt due to covid taking for ever.

Lancashire County Council is expected to present its business case for a new Skelmersdale rail station in the first few months of 2021.

The county council has already secured land for the project when it bought the former Skelmersdale College site for just £1 and demolition works are under way.

Twelve months after Boris Johnson included Skelmersdale's new station in a raft of election promises, West Lancashire MP Rosie Cooper wrote to the Prime Minister and Rail Minister Chris Heaton-Harris for reassurance that government was still committed to the project.

Hopefully the correct forum/thread......Nice video of the envisaged infrastructure at the planned re-opened Reston station.

In December 2020, a formal application for a new Reston station has been submitted to Scottish Borders Council's planning team for their consideration.

With regards to the proposed new East Linton station, in December 2020, a formal application has been made to the Planning Deportment of East Lothian Council.

Apparently Haxby could be built by 2024.....

A new train station at Haxby could be built by 2024 – according to council bosses, following a meeting with the Department for Transport.

Government gave City of York Council £400,000 last year to create a business case for the new station. And a meeting on Tuesday heard that the DfT is “very enthusiastic” about the new station plans and would like to see it built by 2024 if it would be possible to do so.

From Devon Live, 13th Jan 2021. News regarding the new Marsh Barton railway station in Exeter.

Marsh Barton railway station construction work to begin in February

The proposed station will have two platforms, with the eastern and western platforms served by trains to Newton Abbot and Exeter, respectively.

Work is set to begin on the construction of the late running Marsh Barton Railway Station next month.

The station should have been up and running in December 2016, but delays, spiralling costs and protracted discussions with the rail industry led to the plan for the new station at Marsh Barton running at shunting speed.

But after planning permission was granted last month, Devon County Council’s cabinet, when they met on Wednesday, unanimously granted approved for the construction of the £16m project.

The proposed station will have two platforms, with the eastern and western platforms served by trains to Newton Abbot and Exeter, respectively. Each platform will be 124 metres in length, sufficient to accommodate trains formed of up to 5 cars, and will be 4m wide.

Each platform will have a waiting shelter, 10m wide by 1.5m deep, containing 12 stainless steel seats with arm rests, and a perch rail for four passengers, as well as one ticket vending machine on each platform, located inside the waiting shelters.

Vehicular access to the station will be from Clapperbrook Lane East, with a new access road meeting the existing road at a junction on the eastern edge of the side, with access to the station for pedestrians and cyclists will be via paths which connect to the new footway/cycleway, with a new bridge over the river also provided as part of the work.

The delivery of the station has been a long-term aspiration for Devon County Council and forms part of the Devon Metro project, which encompasses a range of rail infrastructure improvements in the Exeter area, with the scheme for Marsh Barton station aimed to provide sustainable access to employment, retail and leisure opportunities.

At Wednesday’s meeting, Cllr Andrea Davis, cabinet member for infrastructure, said that enabling and advanced works on the station would begin in February.

She added: “It has been far from a smooth or easy journey to this point. This will be a destination station and help with the congestion we experience every day in normal times in Marsh Barton, and I look forward to the new station.”

Cllr Andrew Leadbetter, also speaking in support of the station, added: “This is an important piece of infrastructure and although the price has increased, it’s not all for the station, as some of it is for the bridge on a very narrow lane, so we are also getting some highway improvements for pedestrians and cyclists. All in all, this is some really good news.”

No parking spaces will be provided for general use, as it is expected the station will primarily serve as a destination, and it is intended to encourage use of sustainable modes of transport.

The £16m station will be funded by a variety of sources, including £1.3m each from Exeter City Council and Teignbridge District Council, £3m from the Department for Transport, and nearly £3m from the existing Local Transport Plan.

Dave Black, head of transportation, planning and environment, in his report to the cabinet, recommending they grant approval, had said: “This rail station scheme is an important infrastructure project that will boost sustainable travel choices for residents living on the rail lines in Teignbridge, Exeter and East Devon accessing jobs in Marsh Barton and leisure opportunities on the Riverside Valley / Exe Estuary Trail.

“It also delivers a safer pedestrian and cycle link across the railway to promote healthier, active lifestyles for short to medium distance journeys. The scheme fits well with the County Council’s climate emergency commitment and supports Local Plan strategic policies relating to growth in Alphington and South West Exeter, and a business case was submitted for the scheme in order to secure Local Enterprise Partnership Growth Deal funding showed a ‘very high’ value for money category.”

The new station will be served by the current half-hourly service on the Paignton – Exmouth line and will be adjacent to the Energy from Waste plant at Marsh Barton, close to Clapperbrook Lane East.

No date for when the first trains will be stopping at the station was mentioned in either the report or the discussions.

Leeds Bradford Airport Parkway public consultation and detailed plans now available...Summer 2024 (at the earliest)

The West Yorkshire Combined Authority is developing plans to build a new rail station on the existing Harrogate line, between Horsforth Station and the southern end of the Bramhope tunnel. We are currently inviting public feedback on the latest proposals.

The station will provide an interchange to serve Leeds Bradford Airport and the proposed employment hub[1] as well as having a park and ride function to predominantly serve the generally rural catchment between North Leeds and Harrogate.

During Spring 2019, a period of public engagement* took place on the proposals and the majority of respondents stated that they were happy or very happy with the station plans, click here for more information on the first phase of public engagement.
If the finished station looks anything at all like those artist impressions I'll literally eat my train ticket :D

The government announced (23 January 2021) funding to build part of the East-West Railway and funding to further develop proposals for the Ashington line in the north-east.
Transport Secretary launches £794 million investment to boost rail links in north and south

Final round of Restoring Your Railway Ideas Fund opens, inviting proposals to restore railway lines, services and stations that were closed to passengers in 1964.

A £794 million investment package to reopen 2 important rail routes closed more than 50 years ago has been announced today (23 January 2021) by Transport Secretary Grant Shapps.

The new funding includes £760 million for the delivery of the next phase of East West Rail, which will create 1,500 skilled jobs, and reinstate direct rail services between Bicester and Bletchley for the first time since 1968.

It also includes £34 million to rapidly progress plans to reopen the Northumberland line between Newcastle-upon-Tyne and Ashington, which closed to passengers in 1964 as part of the Beeching cuts.

The Transport Secretary has also today called on local authorities, MPs and community groups to submit bids for a share of the third and final round of the Department for Transport’s Ideas Fund, designed to encourage proposals to reopen railway lines, services and stations.

Today’s announcement forms part of the government’s commitments to build back better from the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic and level up transport infrastructure across the country by investing in rail connections that will boost economic growth, unlock new housing, and create jobs and opportunity.

Transport Secretary Grant Shapps said:

Restoring railways helps put communities back on the map, and this investment forms part of our nationwide effort to build back vital connections and unlock access to jobs, education and housing.

Returning these routes to their former glory, and progressing work to reopen even more lines and stations shows our commitment to levelling up journeys across the country as we build back better from the pandemic.

Simon Blanchflower, Chief Executive Officer at East West Railway Company, said:

We are delighted that the government has shown a big commitment to East West Rail and the Oxford-Cambridge arc with today’s investment decision. This funding will enable us to get on with the construction work that will connect communities who live on the East West Rail link.

We are committed to improving connectivity across the Oxford-Cambridge arc, and fully recognise our responsibility to ensure that it is delivered in a way that minimises disruption, supports the regional economy, maximises benefits and supports jobs across the region.

Today’s funding marks an important milestone in the delivery of East West Rail, which will provide better connectivity along the Oxford-Cambridge arc and shorten journey times between routes outside of London, boosting economic growth and serving major new housing developments.

The works between Bicester and Bletchley are expected to create 1,500 jobs. This phase of the project will include the construction of a new stations at Winslow, as well as enhancements to existing stations along the route, including Bletchley. By 2025, 2 trains per hour will run between Oxford and Milton Keynes via Bletchley.

The investment on the Northumberland line will fund preparatory works, including land acquisition, detailed design work and early site works.

Northumberland County Council Leader Glen Sanderson said:

This is absolutely fantastic news, and means we can now finalise our plans to deliver this transformational project for both Northumberland and the wider region.

The Northumberland line will bring a huge boost to the area in terms of economic growth, housing, employment and education opportunities, as well as providing a fast and efficient new transport link between the south-east of the county and Tyneside.

Plans for the project include new stations at Ashington, Bedlington, Blyth Bebside, Newsham, Seaton Delaval and Northumberland Park in North Tyneside, as well as upgrades to the track and changes to level crossings where bridges or underpasses may need to be built.

The latest round of the Ideas Fund will run until 5 March 2021 with successful bids due to be announced later this summer.

Table at #1 updated as necessary.

I'm not certain whether Bletchley (high level) ought to be regarded as a new station or a significant upgrade to the existing station. Similarly HS2 at Manchester Piccadilly which will sit alongside but distinct from the existing station.

Thanks for picking this up @Baxenden Bank, and to your immediate predecessor @Xenophon PCDGS.

I think #58 in your table, Leeds New Lane, could go as the HS2 station is no longer planned to be separate with a connecting walkway a la Waterloo/Waterloo East but bolted on to the existing station at right angles (so more like the completed Euston). Same issue as you've mentioned above; I'd say that if it has the same name it's the same station, just different platforms (see St Pancras International/MML/Thameslink).

Slight correction to the Northumberland Line stations, (as we’ve mentioned in the relevant thread), “Blyth Bebside” is only one station. There’s a spurious comma in the BBC report. The DfT statement above is correct. The station site is in the Bebside area of Blyth. (no “e”).

I don’t think there is any plan to reopen Kingskerswell station, as stated in the table and #19. The new station for Edginswell seems to be forging ahead though - perhaps that is what the poster was referring too?

Updates 25 January 2021

I’ve made a few changes today.
  • Updated the categorisation and status of Marsh Barton, details in #251, thanks to @Wolvercoter.
  • Corrected the stations on the Ashington line proposal, as per #256, thanks to @swt_passenger. The original press release has it correctly stated. Blythe as in Blythe Bridge, a station local to me, apologies for that one.
  • Correction to some typos – Newton Abbot, not Annot! – FFS (Fat Finger Syndrome) where B is next to N on the keyboard.
  • Inserted more specific locations for a number of stations.

I don’t think there is any plan to reopen Kingskerswell station, as stated in the table and #19. The new station for Edginswell seems to be forging ahead though - perhaps that is what the poster was referring too?
The table at #254 is simply a list of all the stations mentioned in the thread up to that point. Provided for the convenience of the reader to see if, and where, any particular proposed station has been discussed. No comment is made on their status.

There are 25 stations which feature in the table at #254 which do not make it to the table at #1. The thread discussion may explain why, depending upon what input other users made. There may also be a specific thread discussing a proposal.

Hasn’t TfGM committed to funding for Golborne station?

Purely coincidental that the Mayor of Greater Manchester, Andy Burnham’s former constituency whilst an MP, Leigh included Golborne?

Purely coincidental that the Mayor of Greater Manchester, Andy Burnham’s former constituency whilst an MP, Leigh included Golborne?

In short, no.

'To re-open Golborne Railway Station' was submitted under Round Two of the 'Restoring Your Railway Fund'. The bid was not successful.

Clearly the scheme has some momentum, but I think it fair to say that it does not yet qualify for inclusion at #1. This first post lists only those stations considered to have a good chance of being delivered in a reasonable timescale.

From the Leigh Journal, 23 January 2020:
Plans to reopen Golborne railway station to be discussed at public meeting

PLANS to reopen Golborne railway station will be discussed in a public meeting next month.

Greater Manchester mayor Andy Burnham will attend the meeting along with Transport for Greater Manchester (TfGM) officers at Golborne Sports and Social Club.

It will be held at the Stone Cross Lane North venue on Tuesday February 18 at 7.30pm when the possibility of reopening the station at the former Railway Road site, which was last open in 1961, will be on the agenda.

The event will follow a meeting attended by Golborne and Lowton West councillors and Andy Burnham in October.

A previous bid to open the station in 2008 was supported by Wigan Council and former Leigh MP Mr Burnham but funding was not secured for the plans.

Proposals to reconnect Golborne to the rail network comes following a surge of houses being built in the area which has increased traffic on the roads.

There is no direct bus service from the area to Manchester and there is limited public transport to the nearest railway station, Newton-le-Willows.

TfGM carried out undertake a feasibility study to see if the station could be re-opened with results due out later this year.

Mr Burnham is backing the campaign to improve public transport in the area and reduce road congestion and air pollution.

More recently, Wigan Today Friday 22 January 2021:
Delight as major public transport plans for borough to be considered

Delight as major public transport plans for borough to be considered

The £15m scheme to reopen a rail link at Golborne is one of two local proposals going forward to the Greater Manchester Combined Authority (GMCA).

Regional leaders will also consider a £2m plan for a new travel hub, including a park and ride, at Tyldesley.

The schemes are included in a £69.5m package of ideas for boosting public transport infrastructure and use across Greater Manchester which have been set out by the city-region's mayor Andy Burnham.

Wigan Council leader Coun David Molyneux said the new station at Golborne which would reconnect the township to the national rail network was an important piece of infrastructure.

Ward councillors also expressed their delight, saying the decision to include the station in the plans under consideration was the culmination of years of campaigning work by the local community and politicians.

It is hoped the proposals, if approved, will better connect communities, open up opportunities, revitalise town centres and local economies while making neighbourhoods cleaner, greener and healthier.

The transport schemes are also part of plans for the city-region's recovery from the effects of the Covid-19 pandemic.

Coun Molyneux said: "The confirmation of funding for a new station at Golborne is superb news. It will connect the town and the wider area with Wigan, Manchester, Cumbria and the Airport, providing more opportunities for our residents, reducing traffic on local roads and regenerating Golborne’s economy.

“This is the result of a lot of hard work, including from the local community and I want to thank everyone who pushed hard for this to become a reality.

"This isn’t the end of the process, we still need to make the business case to Government and our partners, but this will mean we have the money to deliver if we get the go-ahead.”

Ward councillors for Golborne and Lowton West were also thrilled by the news.

In a statement councillors Gena Merrett, Yvonne Klieve and Susan Gambles said: "We wish to thank the Greater Manchester Mayor Andy Burnham, Transport for Greater Manchester and Wigan Council officers for all their hard work in helping to bring about this fantastic result.

"When the station is open passengers will be able to take a train on to Manchester Piccadilly and Manchester Airport in one direction and to Wigan in the other.

"It is hoped that this will result in fewer car journeys, reducing some traffic congestion and air pollution."

The campaign in the local area to re-open Golborne Station has been a long one, with councillors and MPs past and present backing the reopening.

Public meetings have been held for residents to air their views and elected representatives have had discussions with Mr Burnham.

The Golborne station was shut in 1961 as part of the infamous Beeching rail closures, leaving residents with a three-kilometre journey to the nearest station at Newton-le-Willows

It became clear the reopening was on track last year when a very positive report on the idea was published.

Leigh MP James Grundy also applied for Government funding and spoke to transport minister Grant Shapps about the importance of a local rail connection.

Mr Burnham said: "I am determined to speed up the delivery on a world-class, integrated public transport system in Greater Manchester.

"This should not just be seen as building better infrastructure; this is about providing our residents with wider opportunities, access to jobs, skill and education, reducing social isolation and building stronger and better-connected communities where people want to live and are able to thrive.”

The GMCA has now approved funding for Golborne station:
Greater Manchester leaders have agreed to spend more than £69m on developing a ‘world class’ public transport system in the city-region.

The combined authority will progress plans for a long-awaited £15m railway station in Golborne, extra Metrolink stops, and improved bus services on northern and eastern routes.

A further £7m will be allocated towards replacing the Greek Street bridge in Stockport, while £3.3m will improve disabled access at rail stations such as Swinton in Salford.
The schemes are the latest to be supported through the government’s £1.7bn Transforming Cities Fund, of which Greater Manchester has been awarded around £312m since 2018.
However Mr Burnham raised concerns about timetable changes to the Cumbria-Manchester Airport route which would be ‘crucial’ to the new station that it would pass through.
Evidently the GMCA plan is for the hourly Cumbria - Manchester Airport via Wigan North Western service to call at Golborne. But all three options in the Manchester Recovery Task Force consultation document would reroute this service via Bolton from 2022, leaving the new station with no trains!

At least they haven’t built the station before redirecting trains!

Does anyone know what the most recent station (re)opening was that was then subsequently closed because of the rail service being rerouted away from it?

Garston, Merseyside?

Warrington West is struggling. I believe that the business case assumed all four hourly trains on the CLC line would call. But because of pathing issues, Network Rail has only allowed one of the two semi-fasts and one of the two stoppers to stop. Now the Manchester Recovery Task Force appears to have recommended that neither semi-fast should call, and that the stoppers should be split at Warrington Central, so a change would be needed to get to Manchester!

Would seem odd to not at least call one of the two semi fasts there.

They want to add calls at Irlam and Urmston to mitigate removal of one of the two stoppers east of Warrington, so I guess they might want to run fast between South Parkway and Warrington Central to offset the increase in journey time.

Indeed, I'm not sure that £15m will be sufficient, given the location on the WCML. I await it's progression through 'consultation with rail industry partners' with interest. One would imagine that having a service able call at the station, with that agreed with Network Rail and a TOC would be a prerequisite.

The GM Prospectus for Rail 2019 shows a number of additional stations between Golborn and Manchester at Kenyon (Junction), Glazebury and Western Gateway.

The Greater Manchester Combined Authority considered / approved the £15m allocation under 'Prioritisation of Second Tranche of Transforming Cities Funding'.
On the same agenda was 'Greater Manchester Transport Strategy 2040, Our Five-Year Delivery Plan and Local Implementation Plans'. This states at para 119:
Over the next five years, we aim to complete business cases for the early delivery of stations in the areas of Leigh, Lostock Parkway, Little Hulton, Golborne, Slattocks, Dewsnap, Gamesley, Stanley Green and Cheadle.

For the time being I will leave Golborn on my long list, rather than add it to #1, pending a commitment from the rail industry, progress through GRIP (or it's replacement) or submission of a planning appication.

At least they haven’t built the station before redirecting trains!

Does anyone know what the most recent station (re)opening was that was then subsequently closed because of the rail service being rerouted away from it?

Garston, Merseyside?

Waterloo International?

Watford Stadium?
We could head off at a tangent and mention Ramsline Halt, built, served by a single train, and never again. Even Watford Stadium saw a few uses.

There was a segment of local news dedicated to Devizes Parkway on ITV West last night - It looks like re-opening is being pushed for.

The Wiltshire town of Devizes is on track to get a railway station for the first time in 55 years.

Developers hope 'Devizes Parkway' - an extra stop between Westbury and Pewsey - could be in use as early as 2025.

Local leaders are asking for the public's opinions on the station, having already won Government money to put together a formal business case.

Not aware of there being any feasibility studies done yet, one must be lurking for it to put a bid in, maybe not.
