I'm a long-time Trainzer and recently bought MS Train Simulator on steam as it was on sale and I wanted to see what the fuss was about.

One thing that frustrates me so far is that it seems you can only run any given loco on the specific route it was downloaded with, unlike Trainz where you can run any loco on any route. Have I missed something - for example, could I run an LMS Fowler 7F on the Great Western Main Line route?

Also - is it possible to get additional content from anywhere outside Steam? I've seen people mention different routes such as the Harrogate loop on other forums, but these aren't listed in the steam DLC list.

Finally, is there much decent quality freeware created for TS?

Thanks in advance for any help.

MS Train Simulator isn't on Steam. Did you mean Rail Simulator 2018 by Dovetail Games?

If you are referring to TS2018 from Steam, then I can answer your queries.

Firstly, have you tried using the Quick Drive mode? That should let you drive any train on any route you like; i.e. the 7F on the GWML like you mentioned.

You can get freeware routes, scenarios and reskins quite easily. The Steam Workshop has routes and scenarios that are freely available, or alternatively you can go onto sites like http://www.uktrainsim.com/ or https://www.dpsimulation.org.uk/ to get more free content. Note UKTrainSim requires a premium subscription in order to bypass the queues and get better download speeds (more information is on the website). In terms of freeware trains, there are the UKTrainSim Freeware Packs, but apart from that, nothing.

Hopefully that answers some of your questions.

    Great!

Any more questions, please feel free to ask, although those sites will offer more 'specialist' information, if that's what you're after.

Well, I've discovered that on the 'Quick Drive' mode, I can play with different locos to normal on some routes - but not all routes show up as an option in that mode. The Riviera line route and the North Wales Coast don't appear as Quick Drive or Free Roam options.

Also, in Quick Drive, I can choose any loco I have downloaded - but the route is totally empty of any other stock, unlike in free roam where I'm limited to the locos on the map but there are other coaches etc there. Any ideas how I can put any loco I want into an already populated map?
