Now that you have deleted it neither do I

Expect the 450s to be finished by January, possibly earlier :(

With 3 C4k units in service now it looks unlikely for 2012 to see any sort of thumper traction in Ireland. 4004 & 4006 are almost ready for commissioning into service. Once they get done, they could run the service without them. But in reality once 4005 gets passed don't be surprised if you dont see any 450s here. Expect that by Christmas

The MRSI are not interested in running a tour with 450 DEMU's. They have been approached several times.

Would their be many people in GB interested in a 450 farewell tour? If so, Kindly post on this thread to give me an idea as there is something proposed but whether Translink say yes is another thing.

Thanks ITS

Bloody MRSI. Yes, there would be interest. It wouldn't take that much interest to fill a 3-car DEMU anyway.

Not at all. Like I said before, they're daytrippers and not cranks. For example, I believe they're having a railtour this month or next month to Rosslare. Travel down on passenger trains to Rosslare and back. Not exactly a railtour. More like a daytrip which supports my words above! Daytrippers!

Surely though if they want to run daytrips then they're quite entitled to? I mean, they're not under any sort of obligation to run railtours... I know the IRRS runs a mixture of railtours and "daytrips by service train".

Did anyone say they're under any obligation to run railtours? It doesn't mean I have to be pleased about their offering if they don't though. IIRR they do run railtours from time to time.....

Sorry if I was unclear, I don't mean there's anything wrong with not being pleased with their offerings (TBH, daytrips by service train aren't really my cup of tea either). Just that if the MRSI aren't interested in running a 450 tour well that's their prerogative really, I don't think it's necessarily a bad reflection on them not running one.

Fair enough, although I think anyone not wanting to run a 450 class tour wants his bumps felt!

From a communication received tonight it seems the MRSI may be interested in a tour after all. Watch this space!

May sound a daft question but how hard would it be to regauge and reengine a 450 and make it DDA compatible?

Just a thought prompted by the assorted Sprinter refurbishment threads - might this be a way of getting some cost effective Pacer replacements?

450 are DDA compliant

Not pacer replacements surely? There's a stock shortage. Any 'new' trains simply to allow other units to be cascaded to strengthen other workings.

Currently Pacers have to be replaced (as there is no way they can be updated to be DDA-compliant cost-effectively) by 2019.

By 2019 the NIR DEMUs would be totally knackered if they were brought over here. It is 8 years away.

It's sad that when the sandite finally goes the EE 4SRKT will be heard no more in N Ireland. They seem popular enough to the enthusiasts, but this seems to fall on deaf ears.

It'll be a pity to see the last of them go alright, but you can hardly expect NIR to retain something just because it appeals to enthusiasts... I suppose if enough enthusiasts were interested/committed a 80 class preservation group could be set up, that is, if there's anytime left to rescue one.

Here's the thing, The MRSI say there is no type of low loader in NI to transport these trains in whole to another destination. That's bulls**t. How did NIR get all of the 80s out in June 2008? I do remember as I was there all day. All 80 class vehicles left fully with engines etc still inside. It seems to me as if they are pussy footing around and trying to let it be too late then not feel so bad.

The RPSI don't have room to my knowledge in Whitehead so they can't be blamed in any way.

I've seen pictures if I'm not mistaken of C4K CAF vehicles on low loaders. I think you took them FFS! 18-19 years ago I used to work in road haulage in Northern Ireland and there were certainly vehicles suitable for carrying large and heavy loads then. I used to have to ring the RUC to get permission for routes through Belfast for them when we needed to shift stuff.

I'm concerned that the notion that Whitehead being 'full' means that essentially preservation in Ireland stops now. That might be an OK view for an ageing kettle veg, but in a generation or so younger enthusiasts may be asking "where are all the railcars?". The S in RPSI doesn't stand for 'steam', and as the only major preservation operator in Ireland they have a responsibility in my view to act. Like it or not they are to all intents and purposes the Irish equivalent of the NRM.

It's all very reminiscent of 'Yes Minister' isn't it? There's always a reason why X can't be done.
I find all societies are the same. It's 'your' society when there's work to be done. Ask why things can't be done a certain way and 'the comittee makes the rules' is the reply!

It's a shame that there is no body such as the NRM in Ireland. An 80 class is such an important train in the history of railways in [Northern] Ireland that there is no question that an example of the equivalent of that train would be saved for the national collection in GB. While I hugely respect the efforts of the RPSI, they have far too much of the weight of responsibility for railway preservation in Ireland forced onto their shoulders.
