Night Riviera coaches on WCML

Today whilst photographing in the Lune Gorge I saw a four-coach consist going south, I was quite a way away but it looked like two Night Riviera coaches sandwiched between two non-passenger vans. Any idea what this was?

Could it not have been some FGW buffets (well TSOs now actually) on their way back?

Correct, 31601 operating 5Z32 Kilmarnock - Old Oak Common with rebuilt TSOs 42504/5.

I had the pleasure of seeing it thundering through platform 4 at Preston

It still hadn't quite made it to Great Western territory today. The consist was sitting at Wembley this morning, and by this evening class 47 D1916 had been added to the other (North) end of the consist, and strangely a ropey looking ex-Virgin mark 3 had been coupled to the "outer" end of 31601.

That may have been a Chiltern Mark 3 going to Bristol Barton Hill for a prepaint into BR Blue and Grey
