This service makes the following calls

Stoke on T 08.58 CDR's to Manchester not valid
Kidsgrove 09.05 CDR's valid B3 restriction
Congleton 09.12 CDR's not valid B2 restriction
Macclesfield 09.20 CDR's valid B2 restriction
Prestbury 09.24 CDR's valid B2 restriction
Adlington 09.27 CDR's valid B2 restriction
Poynton 09.30 CDR's valid B1 restriction
Bramhall 09.33
Cheadle H 09.37
Stockport 09.41
Heaton C 09.45
Levenshulme 09.48
Manchester P 09.56

A B3 restriction means valid from 09.00, B2 from 09.15, B1 from 09.30

Can anyone explain why Congleton has a B2 restriction and off peak tickets to Manchester are not valid, yet they are valid from Kidsgrove?

It is cheaper to buy a CDR KDG to MAN than a SDR CNG to Man and start journey at Congleton!

Also a Macclesfield - Manchester ticket has a B2 restriction but a Macclesfield to Stockport ticket is B1 and not valid on this train- any reason?

I agree it's daft, it's not the only example by any means but it's among the worst.

Passenger focus don't seem to care as the system is "simple" now that all those different fares are called "off peak"...

Leaving out the service(s) you just mentioned, Kidsgrove isn't the most accessible station to Manchester since Congleton gets Cross Country services and then stations from Macclesfield north get Northern Trains services, well it wasn't till Northern introduced an hourly to Stoke as before it used to be peak only to Stoke. So only real way was to get the train to Crewe and up to Manchester.

They probably set the different restriction for Kidsgrove as it is/was a little bit difficult to get to, people that decided this probably didn't look at the timetable exactly or forgot to change it back .

No longer true in Congleton's case - it gets a single XC service at 7.03. All the others run through to Macc.

Congleton lost the XC services when the hourly Stoke - Manchester was introduced in December.

I think the reason Congleton has a B2 restriction is because there used to be a XC train prior to December 2008 at 09:25

Northern Just haven't updated it yet
