It served its community for decades, taking deliveries of milk churns and food on the platform and allowing villagers to travel the length of the small branch line.

But this 19th century railway station was abandoned by British Rail when Dr Beeching's axe fell in 1965, leaving it to the care of its station master who purchased it for just £800.

Now Norham Station in Northumberland, a time capsule of railway history, complete with its original signal box, ticket office, waiting room and platform, is set to make the perfect home for a rail enthusiast after it was put up for sale.

You don't seem to get much actual accommodation for the money although there are 3 acres, and you could potentially swap it for some horrid little hole in London and still have some change to spend on running stock for the model railway....

All you need is a bit of track, small steam engine a brake van and a few wagons and you have a full sized "model" railway c/w all the bits. Its a wonderfull deal. now whos got the odd 1/2 millon to spend.

If only I had the money.

I hav visisted the station a couple of times when in the area. The old girl would personally show you around and was obviuosly very proud of the station and her husband (who would fire up the model railway for you!).

Sad to see it close. Hope it get a sympathetic buyer.

Fantastic place, though if you wanted to reinstate any track the site is a bit hemmed in. You'd need to buy the adjacent trackbed off the farmer for a start.....
