I'm now commuting into London Waterloo from North Sheen on a season ticket, and was wondering if i could break my journey on the long way around the kingston loop (e.g. at New Malden).

My understanding is that providing I am travelling on a through train, on a valid route this is ok?

Any thoughts?

The ticket is only via Kingston due to the so-called 'direct train rule'. It's been debated a few times before. One such thread is here.

It boils down to this quote from the National Rail Conditions of Carriage
(i) a train on which you are able to make your entire journey without changing trains;
... and whether by breaking your journey it will still apply
