172s ride ok on similar bogies, so it's not necessarily just down to the fact that the bogies have inside frames, it's down to the fact they were made by CAF.

The one I'm on now has no functional toilet or Wifi, and the aircon is leaking onto passengers/luggage rack. They've been on this route for a month.

    These things absolutely suck.

Can anyone tell me, please, if all the 195s have been accepted for service.
Also when will there be a full allocation on the York - Blackpool service.
    Thank you

Does anyone know in what order of priority that CAF have a programme of fault rectification works on the Class 195 units?

Does anyone know if Northern had free 195s this Saturday afternoon? Asking as some friends were rammed onto a two car 195 Manchester Airport- Liverpool Lime St this afternoon and I saw a tweet from Northern saying all available stock was out. Just wondering in the context of the 10 units mentioned here earlier this week which were commissioned but reserved for training, which presumably wasn’t happening today as there were 195s in sidings. I get that they could have been under maintenance, but just interested if Northern did have spare 195s but just hadn’t planned them into diagrams today.

There are rumours about a number with various faults as well as they have around 8 in store, 4 on training and 7 awaiting delivery.

Dare I say I had a very pleasant experience on my first 195 journeys this week?

I didn’t notice any poor ride quality, particularly considering I was handwriting notes at the time. The notes I wrote on the 195 are much neater than on my connecting 390. Seats were comfy. Plenty of leg room. PIS and toilet working fully. Full ticket checks.

And Northern have sent a load of Pacers back to Angel, so don't let anyone tell you that the present implied rolling stock shortage is anything other than intentional.

(5m24 onwards if the timestamp doesn't come through)

Is this knocking noise from under 195s common to all of them, or just a problem with this particular unit? It doesn't appear to be track joint noise. I've complained about something similar on 345s but it's never as bad as this. It occurs at various points throughout this video and is really noticeable compared to the rest of the noise from the unit.

I don’t find the 195 ride that bad, in fact it reminds me of the ride on the WCML Pendo carriages. The older MK3 derived stock (150, 156) do ride better I admit. The underfloor banging on the 195s is annoying though and needs to be fixed.

A unit that is available and can be used for training doesn't necessarily mean that unit is available for passenger duties. I believe seals may be broken and stuff isolated and or defects that mean they're not suitable for pax use.

While at Stalybridge today, I noticed that it said on a display that a service was late because more trains than usual were undergoing maintenance.

At Lime Street yesterday morning at 1200 195102 was sat in Platform 8 with its engine running. This had arrived very early on from Manchester as an EMU substitute. 195116 was in Platform 6 on the 1219 stopper to Manchester Oxford Road (normally a 150) and 195009 arrived at 1201 into Platform 8 from Manchester Airport to form the 1216 return service. 195009 was of course full and standing when it left. Why do Northern put two car units on this service? It would be better off reverting to 2 x Class 156 units.

There is the supposed random element for Northern of course! Perhaps because an old train doing the duty is an obvious failing but a full train is simply a lot of passengers. How far is Northern from having all its 195s in service which would be a point at which this becomes much worse.

Yes, this is part of the ride/bogie issue.

As car salesmen say when you complain. Its a 'characteristic' of the vehicle. All 195s do this.

First time on a 195 yesterday from Chester to Leeds. Then onto a 170, also for the first time. The 170 ride was a clear step up from the 195, which was vibrating and banging for most of the trip. Even my regular refurbed 150 rides better. Why not put the 170 on the longer route and the 195 on the Harrogate?

You were probably on my train! The 09:20 from Victoria then 10:56 to Harrogate. Yes the 170 did seem a good product but I like the 195s too

Looking back up the thread the last two posts about the ‘door closing unexpectedly’ issue seem to have been the above two from 18 and 22 November.
Since then there have numerous posts regarding poor ride, PIS out of sync, ASDO/doors not opening, noisy HVAC etc. but no more about passengers getting trapped in doors.
Has it been fixed - or is it just that it happens so regularly that it’s no longer worth commenting on ?

Guards are more aware that when bypassing ASDO if they don't press and hold the door release buttons and SDO switch for five seconds the doors will reclose quickly. Drivers are also aware of the fact that on arrival at the end of a journey removing the driver's master key too quickly, e.g. before door release, may result in the doors closing in the same way.

All software issues. And these issues, while being safety issues, are only a drop in the ocean of all the 'features' on these units.

Not heard of any deliveries from CAF for a while. Anyone any idea when delivery will be completed and/or all the new but stored units are commissioned.

The ride quality is fine on straight track. It's over points that it turns into a bucking bronco. Slade Lane Junction to Piccadilly is particularly bad.

From my observarion having travelled on the 195s on an almost daily basis since July, the 'clunking' noise from the bogies and which thuds through the whole carriage seem to only affect some units. Would suggest it is a particular defect that was need rectification on the units affected.

There are other more minor issues such as rattling overhead racks / glass dividing panes near doors, condensation on doors (god only knows why they agreed to non-insulated & single glazing as this was inevitable to anyone with a basic understanding of physics and chemistry) and general lack of maintenance in regards to cleaning them properly to ensure they last 30 years and don't look battered after 10 (which lies more with Northern than CAF)

I've never yet seen a hoover employed on a CAF unit.

And yes the construction of the exterior doors is a bizarre choice, one that wouldn't be such an issue in a warmer country like Spain.

Central Spain can get pretty cold in winter.

That is my impression too, albeit on not that many trips. They either do it badly or they don't seem to do it at all.

Thanks. Is any progress being made on sorting out these ‘features’, as far as you know ?
(e.g. a prioritised list of ‘fixes’ grouped into software releases with planned release dates.)

Not as quickly as they should be, but every now and then we hear about something or notice something. Some stuff is quite serious so should be prioritised.
