Indeed, many passengers choose to stand if even seats are available so everyone having a seat isn't a necessity. Being able to board is much more important

195s are on York - Hebden Bridge today. A 3 car 195 has roughly the same number of seats as a 3 car 158 and overall can probably carry more passengers

Not sure about the capacity but certainly a reduction in comfort from the smooth riding 158s with vestibules to keep out the cold and noise.
158s certainly better for long distance services with few stops (unmaintained air con accepted).

Currently on 11.20 from Burnley to York which is a two coach 158. Very full as the previous York train was cancelled. The 11.03 to Blackpool was a 150/2 so no sign of a 195 yet!

With the new timetable in place anyone know haw many 195s are actually available for use rather than stored for some reason or awaiting delivery.
    Thanks

Just 2car 195 002 looked very full on the Calder Valley today on the 13.42 Leeds Chester.
The 15.20 Man vic ex chester was 4 car.

Driver shortage (same driver for both) rather than any issues with 195s, there's a lot of sickness about at the minute.

I hardly think that the same driver could be booked to do both 0725 Manchester Airport - Barrow and 0808 Preston - Manchester Airport.

The driver who is booked to work the 0453 from Barrow & 0725 from MIA is the same one booked to work the 0647 from Barrow from Oxford Road. Best option would be to cancel at Preston rather than depositing a unit sans driver at Oxford Road at 0854.

So am I correct in deducing that the driver, who for whatever reason wasn't there, was booked to work the following?
    0453 Barrow - Manchester Airport arr 0718
0725 Manchester Airport - Oxford Road arr 0745
0856 Oxford Road - Manchester Airport arr 0918
    0928 Manchester Airport - Barrow arr 1200

What was the ultimate fate of the driver who was booked to do 0747 Oxford Road - Barrow?

I find a 195 quite awkward for standing, due to the lack of handrails.

It’s a Liverpool driver - Manchester Oxford Road to Wigan. Then a Wigan driver Wigan right through to Barrow, so assume to taxi or passenger on the next services to get themselves in the right place.

He had to make his way to Wigan on the following service to work the 0921 to LIV.

Nice new shiny 195 on the 7.11 from Accy -York. Can feel the improved acceleration from a 158 up the hill towards Huncoat...

Not very warm though... is that normal?

It should be warm, they warm up quite quickly. Ask the guard to check that the saloon HVAC is on, if a 195 has been in 'ECS mode' it knocks the saloon HVACs off, but taking it out of ECS mode doesn't reinstate the HVAC automatically, it must be done manually, another masterpiece of design.

The saloon HVAC is meant to be working at all times when in passenger service as it forms an important part of the fire detection system.

Only the driver can switch on the saloon HVAC but the guard would be able to check its function on the TCMS in the rear cab.

07:25 Ellesmere Port to Leeds was 3-car yesterday but 2-car today. Neither journey featured on Journey Check. Does this vary day-by-day or should it have been 3-car today and nobody updated JC?

Its booked a 195/1 NH724 diagram so that should be a 3 car.

Northern's random unit generator is kept under check now on those Ellesmere port jobs due to Liverpool depot not signing 158s or 153s. It would either have to be a 150 or 195 of some kind for it to run through (or even a 142 which is unlikely now).

Okay so with almost no Pacers left in service, are these ramping up with effect from today?

It's a joke that they're turning these out as two carriage units. If they want to use them on main line services, they should build centre carriages for all of them.

They were I think built as 2s for their eventual use confined to small branch lines like Ormskirk and Kirkby. But they were meant to run in pairs. You can't, however, trust the random unit generator (or rather you can trust it to send out unsuitable stock for any given service).

I do however agree that they should be extended to 3 and possibly some 4-car sets with diagramming used to vary train lengths rather than doubling up (unless any services merit 6), i.e. the Thameslink model.

I have to say, I've never had a pair of them yet on my lines. Their eventual cascade onto small branch lines seems a long way into the distant future, so the logic for having them as 2-carriage seems flawed.

Noting lack of decent hand-holds - these units do seem to have a yaw issue? The CAF Mk5's also seem to have HF pitch oscillation - not the MF 'Zebedee' effect on Mk 3 with worn primary suspension damping, but higher

There's a 3 car 195 on the 1929 Leeds - Knottingley tonight which may now be the allocated unit

Stand side-on and place your feet 2 feet apart Bovverboy (although the lack of overhead handrails is an oversight)

On another front the 'random unit generator' appears to have subsided on the Manchester-Liverpool route and we are seeing consistent 6-coach diagrams almost every weekday now. Either fewer teething problems or more units have mitigated the problem.
