Sounds like 37.5 hours of spreadsheets per week.

If you thrive on digging through stuff, can write Macros and state the unpopular then it is a role for you. It will be one of those roles that you will marry for 12 months because it will just set your mind up to think in certain ways. Being a rail enthusiast is not necessarily an advantage because they will expect you to find the trends and state the solutions that really could shake up the status quo.

It seems a shame that Northern should restrict this vacancy to graduates only. Surely someone with a background in the rail industry would be more suitable than some wet-behind-the-ears student clutching a micky mouse Media Studies degree?

Not necessarily. When jobs are marked as Graduate Only it is usually because some sort of academic discipline is required. Of course, not all graduates would be suitable, in this case someone with a proven analytical and statistical background would seem to be in pole position compared to someone who has read Media Studies.

It doesn't exclude rail staff per se either, there must be quite a few graduates employed out there!

You'll probably find that due to the job market that there will be a lot of people with very good degrees applying for jobs such as this.

I applied for a recent graduate job where over 700 people applied for 6 vacancies.

I'm currently in a similar role for another toc but now moving onto bigger things.

This is a specialised role, that most frontline staff wouldn't have the skills required. All the people they interviewed for my role come from analysis based backgrounds. Since so many people are looking for work, there's lot of good quality candidates!

Thanks for the replies.

My degree and my dissertation is similar to the type of number crunching expected in the role. I understand that being an enthusiast won't put me at an advantage. Rather, the role is really after what I've picked up in my degree so I just hope that I'll be considered at the least.

Yeah, they announced by email to those in the process of applying that the deadline had been set for midnight on Thusday 29th March due to the high number of applications they had already received.

I got my application in in time. :)

Just in the nick of time there then! So lucky I saw the role the other week when casually browsing.

Put mine in on Monday. Didn't see any mention of only being able to apply for one of the positions so thinking I should have applied for both now.
