142078 was at Piccadilly on Tuesday afternoon on 2S28 to New Mills. Afraid I didn’t really notice what it was coupled to.

I’ve heard that the pacers have very limited days from here onwards and very few remain. First of all, is this correct and second of all, which of the diagrams do pacers still operate?

Northern have confirmed that they will be using class 142s until December.

There’s a timetable change in September so new diagrams on those dates will corroborate with the timetable change.

There is a timetable change on Northern on Monday 14th September. The 142s are said to be losing their booked diagrams to Sheffield in favour of use on the Mid Cheshire Line.

Will the Rose Hill diagram move to the mid Cheshire?

The set of trains which run the 05:56 Chester to Piccadilly and 08:02 Chester to Piccadilly will either go on to other services or back to the depot. They'll be 2 sets of trains which run services all day on a 2 hourly basis, as is the case now. They'll also be an 08:08 Piccadilly to Chester, which I'm told will come off the 07:01 Buxton to Piccadilly not the 05:56 Chester to Piccadilly, that set will shunt in to the sidings at Chester until the afternoon when it will then run the 16:02 Chester to Piccadilly and the 17:41 Piccadilly to Chester.

So they'll be a total of 5 sets used in the morning peak, 2 for the off-peak services and 3 for the evening peak services with one of the sets being used at peak times also being used on a Buxton service.

I've got no idea which one of them will be Pacers though, if it's one of them then that's one too many in my opinion!

At least it's extra capacity - I hear there's fears of severe overcrowding once schools go back in September!

They have agreed to add in one extra service in the morning from 31st August but that won't cover all schoolchildren, while even with the additional services from 14th September some scholars will have to wait until 5pm for a train home based on what another poster has said about flows to and from Altrincham schools. With services like the 07:41 Manchester to Chester and 14:02 Chester to Manchester also not operating from 14th September, other services will still have to carry passengers who usually travel on those services i.e. the ones the schoolchildren use.

The diagram which has the Buxton trip can't use a Pacer, as they're banned from the Buxton line. Think it's the gradients but I could be wrong.

Im going to Leeds next Wednesday. What services would pacers operate around Leeds? Ive seen them before on Sheffield via Castlefords and also Knottingleys.

I don't think there's any pacers doing service's around Leeds anymore

The nearest Pacers to Leeds are the 144s in warm storage at Keighley unfortunately. The only Pacers Northern have in service are the handful of 142s operating around Manchester.

Why can't 2-car 144s operate, coupled to a PRM-compliant unit as per the 142s? Thinking 3-car plus another unit might be overkill on most routes.

How come Northern arent operating any 144s anymore, especially with covid going on to increase capacity etc.

Are these in Keighley station or some sidings/stabling point.

I couldn't give a concrete answer your first question as I'm not overly familiar with Northern allocations around Leeds and Sheffield at present. I do know they can't work with 170s or 195s, but I'm unsure what else is in the area regularly just now.

I believe the 144s at Keighley are in the Worth Valley platforms and up the branch beyond.

Had the day off work yesterday to bash the Hope Valley Line , but message on Facebook suggested the 142 had come off that route the night before
Quite correct - great disappointment
Managed 142078 on the Victoria to Kirby and 142065 from Picadilly to Marple Rose Hill - nil else seen
