There doesn't seem to be much enthusiasm for preserving EMUs. Classes 304, 305 and 504 have not done well. Maybe one of the main reasons is that preserved railways cannot run them under their own power unlike DMUs?

Not sure if this is the correct forum but do agree with your comment. Efforts should be made to use at weekends the Old Dalby test track for electric heritage traction. Both could co exist with careful planning.

And presumably you are the person to make those efforts. Let us know how you get on.

Yet Metrolink trams with limited seats, no toilets and severe bogie hunting are apparently acceptable on several former heavy rail routes in Greater Manchester.
Other parts of Europe have or have had railbuses, but there doesn't seem to be many complaints about them. There are these in service in Hungary, Czech Republic and Slovakia: http://www.nic.funet.fi/index/pics/railways/Hungary/diesel/index.html
I take it the newer trams are no better? I've been to Bury a few times on the original trams and the ride was atrocious. Considerably worse than a Pacer on the Oldham loop.

In reply to two of the posts earlier on in this thread about the "romanticising of Pacers", personally I think its down to their uniqueness and their character. The best example I can think of is - if a woman wants a man with character, then she should opt for a man that is a human version of a Pacer.

Anyway, lets get back on topic with the lastest updates, including the units that are earmarked for preservation.

Red - withdrawn.
Orange - scrapped / sent to be scrapped
Yellow - converted to other use (does not include food tins or razor blades).
Green - modified for Passengers of Reduced Mobility.

Not sure why there’s a question mark against 142073 but it’s been in traffic daily since Sunday following a wheelset change.

Strange that a “spares donor” hasn’t had anything removed and also strange it’s not at the back of the sidings but with TFWs other units

Apparently they could revive this later on
How do you know it hasn’t had anything removed? There’s a lot you can take off a Pacer without it being obvious to someone viewing from a passing train.

Pacers aren’t the trains we really should be running in 2020. The Class 195s are quite a step up in terms of comfort, Rose quality and so on. However there is an issue with reliability it would seem.

Those of us who remember the 101s on the Romiley circuits were sad to see them go but it would be insane to suggest running a train service with them these days.

What matters is that heritage lines can get their hands on them and operate them.

The thing we all have to remember is that the Pacers saved a lot of places from losing their railway altogether. A lot of areas the railway simply doesn’t make a profit and therefore a cheap solution was required to avoid cutting communities off.

The thing I don’t approve of is withdrawing and scrapping serviceable units when the replacements aren’t available or reliable.

The question mark was put there as something happened to 073 and I was not 100% sure if the unit would see service again. Nice to know that its back in service again.

Absolutely no clue, Kingsbury seems to be very quiet about the whole thing whereas Newport docks and booths are very open. If, like me your trying to see it I’m sorry but I don’t think there is any chance you will get to see it :(

142 059 was written of as a result of having gone into the buffer stops and mounting the platform at Liverpool Lime Street in October 1991. The rear vehicle 55709 was stored for a couple of years round the back of Newton Heath depot.

Does anyone out there know where and when the vehicles of 008 and 059 were scrapped ?

I’m sure I saw a photo once of the nose of a Pacer, I think 059, stored in a vault under Manchester Victoria station. Does anyone know more & know if it’s still down there?

It was from 142059 yes, was incomplete, missing a section towards the roof, and was just the moulded GRP front part of the cab exterior. It's been gone a while now, I'm not sure if it was donated to a preservation group and I think it was also possibly used to copy to fabricate another GRP cab front needed for 142091 that had damage from hitting a landslip at Clarborough tunnel. I might be barking up the wrong tree there but it rings a bell.

That sounds right you know. I had seen a photo of it under Man Vic, not sure where those vaults are or even why it was put there considering 142059 was written off at Liverpool Lime street. I did see a photo of it stabled at Edge Hill after the accident. So why they transported the cab front to Man Vic seems odd to me.

It was reclaimed within the past ten years though iirc and used in some way. Probably as you say to repair the damaged 142.

It was stored at the back end of an arch at the end of Walkers Croft under the station, I'm not sure whether it would've been visible from the public street (you'd have needed a very good torch) but the space it was in has got a few bits of junk in now such as old signals.

As the Worksop stored 142s seem to allocated to various private or preservation groups I suspect they will depart by road and may not appear in here.

The Pacer Preservation Soceity (which has either changed its name or disbanded) recieved the cab front of 142059. Prior to it being donated to them, the cab front was used to made a remould for 142091 and was later moved from Manchester Victoria to a storage site somewhere near Blackpool. That is the last of what I know of where the cab front is, its probably in someones garden by now.

From rushden transport society

Rushden Transport Society said:
The new face of heritage railways arriving soon. Fresh out of service and to full mainline spec, these class 142 pacer two car sets will re-launch our railway at Rushden. Restoration to our existing rolling stock will continue/compliment and add variety to the Rushden experience..

Just a gentle reminder that this thread is for information regarding the withdrawal of pacers

Please create a new thread (if there isn't already one) or use an existing one (if there is) if you wish to discuss anything else, such as comparing Pacers with similar units in other countries, or discussing why people like pacers, or any other subject.

Thanks.
