And the Manchester Piccadilly to marple/rose hill/new mills/Sheffield services
I saw the majority last Thursday (16th), as noted below:
Seen at Rochdale:
142 011 + 150 117 Rochdale to Blackburn service, I think
NH - 142 055, 142 061 (might have been more but view obstructed).
Seen at Victoria between 12:00 and 14:00:
142 047 + 150 125 Clitheroe to Rochdale
142 036 + 150 149 Rochdale to Clitheroe
142 041 + 150 140 Rochdale to Blackburn
142 058 + 150 127 Kirkby to Manchester Victoria
Seen at Piccadilly between 14:30 and 16:30:
142 051 + 150 128 Manchester to Rose Hill, Marple
142 090 + 150 134 Manchester to New Mills Central
142 043 + 150 150 Rose Hill, Marple to Manchester
142 078 + 150 269 ECS from NH. Not sure what service this then worked.

If anyone could post what 142 004, 035 and 045 were doing (if anything) that day, it'd be good to know - thanks! I have it that 045 has hardly been used since the beginning of January 2020.

I saw the majority last Thursday...

Thanks! I assume the 04x and 05x numbered sets are the ex-Merseyrail units? I was considering a run over to Man Picc for a last run round on a 142 in the next month or so, but if they're the awful ex-MR sets I think I'll pass on it. Which of the surviving sets are ex-NS, I assume the higher numbered sets in the 70-90s number ranges.

Yeah, pretty much.

Surviving operational ex-NS sets are 142018/065/071/078/087/090/094/095.

And for reference, surviving operational ex-MR sets are 142041/043/045/047/051/055/058.

TfW still operating a wide range of Pacers so don’t have to go to Manchester to sample one remember!

The ones at Heaton, 013/8/65/8/70/1/87/94 and 95 haven't moved since December 31st. Think 023 hasn't worked for a while also. Was at NL last time I heard.

For the full experience the chosen unit needs to have a least a handful of soaking wet seats from the leaking roof. One of the cars should have horrendous wheel flats causing teeth loosening vibrations. A few tight corners need to be included on the journey so the wheel screaming can be experienced with full effect. A 2 car unit should be displayed singly, a crush load of angry punters would complete the picture...

Well put. And a nice long journey too to bring it all together? Sheffield to Manchester? Newcastle to Carlisle?

I suspect the unit with different light surrounds has had the original ones replaced for whatever reason and due to the limited time span before its withdrawal they’ve not worried about it looking ‘right’

For one of the last runs you want Lancaster to Carlisle Via. Barrow, then to Newcastle, Middlesbrough, Northallerton, York, Leeds and back to Lancaster.
Some nice jointed track for the full bounce, nice tight curves for the screaming and for the full effect causing delays to the fast services on the ECML.
Or a short trip Lancaster to Hellifield and over the S & C to Carlisle and back along the coast to Lancaster.

I don’t think they would worry about it looking ‘right’ if they were keeping it for the next 10 years

That unit hasn't had different light surrounds, it's just that someone has given them a painted white lining.

In todays Bradford telegraph and argus Airedale hospital and Fagley school in the running to receive pacers.

apparently all 3 will be https://www.railadvent.co.uk/2020/0...keighley-wins-pacer-train-in-competition.html

Railway Advent said:
Three groups in Northern England have won a Pacer train carriage for community use as part of the Transform a Pacer competition.
The competition means that after 30 years, Northern has retired their Pacer trains and communities can now use them in new and exciting ways.

Platform 1 will be converting a Pacer carriage into a kitchen to teach cooking skills.

Airedale NHS Trust will be converting their carriage into mixed-use, non-clinical space to improve the experience for patients using Airedale General Hospital, with their focus on helping children and families, as well as those suffering with dementia.

Fagley Primary School will set the Pacer up as a new science lab for students, helping promote STEM learning.

The winners were announced on last night’s ‘The One Show’ on BBC One.

As the donation is from Porterbrook I guess these will be 144 carriages. Is this likely to be one 3 car unit split with a car for each winner, or 3 different centre cars perhaps.
I'm a bit ar loss as to what a school and a hospital can do with a pacer carriage although Airedale has a mental health unit and there are people with perhaps understandable public transport phobias.

2 pacers getting ready to move at Worksop. Anyone know if: The east Kent railway, Waverley route heratage railway or rushden railway have mainline access?

None of them have rail access. The East Kent Railway could with some substantial shrub clearance and track work, the Waverley Route Heritage Association is located in the middle of the old Waverley route at Whitrope, about as far removed from civilisation and railways as it's possible to be in mainland Britain!

Heritage Excursion use

completely unnecessary. Nobody is suggesting that a journey over an hour would be acceptable on a Pacer surely? Most excursions last over that! Heritage railways have them, that’s enough really. If they are kept to mainline standard you could see one perhaps on branch line shuttles like Looe-Liskeard or Grosmont-Whitby perhaps. However mainline excursion use would be a really niche and probably not economically viable use.

Question do you think Locomotive Services Limited will ever buy a 142 or 143 or 144?
Much as I love Pacers, in this instance there might be a clue in the company name, Locomotive Services Limited.
They specialise in locomotives, for tours or spot hire.

It's brilliant that some Pacers are being preserved. If any are kept to mainline standards it will be a bonus, but at this stage we shouldn't count on it.
