why is it that some 142s must be connected to a unit with PRM mods and others can operate without being connected to a PRM unit

As per the dispensation letters:

Northern Trains 142s and Great Western Railway 143s have to be coupled to a PRM compliant unit but aren't restricted on routes

Transport for Wales 142s and 143s can run on their own and also aren't restricted on routes

...and Northern Trains 144s can run on their own but only on specified routes

Transport for Wales got the most lenient dispensation because to have any restrictions wouldn't have been practical

Interesting to see or not due to overcrowding top off the olr northern agenda whether some off the stored 142s at heaton T&R.S.M.D may come back to the north west or not at newton Heath T.M.D for use with prm units. To the end off may. Also for first time ever today in the olr and government statement on takeover that overcrowding was mentioned but more importantly. Nothing about the banishing off Pacers or Pacers in general was mentioned which was a good thing has it been actually realised that Pacers are more than capable for use for overcrowding. And preventing cancellations and that they will be still be used because nothing else is available

A little off topic but does anyone know the diagrams for 144008 now that it’s been reformed into a three car unit?
I'll be very surprised if 144008 sees service again. I believe it is currently in 'Warm Storage' with severe corrosion. Same applies to the centre coach from 144021 which is now in 144008.

I always thought the Aluminium panelled 144s were much better than the steel 142s. Perhaps there steel framed.

Must have left way later. Saw it going through newcastle central just before 11

In fact, today's move was a VSTP which apparantly comprised 142 035/055/047. So with another 3 next week, Gascoigne Wood'll soon be filling up again!

Also tonight whilst travelling on 1814 Sheffield to Manchester Piccadilly. Got speaking to various rail user groups and other members off staff and tonight is the Last night for the 142s and locally they have campaigned for the 142s to stay to the may timetable. But sadly due to politics and arriva northern how it committed and replaned its pacer replacement plan into its franchise. For when the Pacers had to be replaced at later date. Due to late 195. Was not sufficient.
Poor hope valley will now see short forms on 1649 and 1749 Manchester Piccadilly to Sheffield. Also they claim on mcv side only 2 Pacers will be left or so for the remaining two diagrams.

Updated to show the three class 142's that are now of lease, these have been highlighted red.

From what I gather, there are now roughly 16 (out of 94) class 142's in service - that is all the TfW units and the handful that Northern has left. There's 23 (of of 25) class 143's in service with both GWR and TfW and finally there's 22 (out of 23) class 144's operating with Northern. Once all the class 142's have been withdrawn from service, the list below will concentrate on both the class 143's and 144's up to the point when the last class 143 and 144 is withdrawn (I'm guessing it'll be 144012 with 144023 being the penultimate and last three car set.) I do envy someone copying the list into wikipedia, its going to take them ages.

All of TfW's 142s = 15, plus a handful of Northern ones = at least 18...?
