Looks like Northern 2S87 1514 Sheffield to Manchester Piccadilly Class 195 was stranded for several hours in the Totley Tunnel. It eventually arrived nearly 2 hours down at Grindleford and was cancelled with brake issues at Hathersage. This has meant delays and cancellations. Due to Northern cancelling so many trains in advance between Manchester Piccadilly and New Mills (short notice timetable change) plus the Manchester Piccadilly to Sheffield trains, this has meant the Manchester local stations that should still have had services are with a train in the rush hour for 3 hours and not alternative transport.

To reassure, very slightly, it left Sheffield 4 minutes late and arrived at Grindleford only 3 minutes late at 15.32, so no apparent breakdown in Totley tunnel? After a very long delay it seems it got to Hathersage before being taken out of service, perhaps because detraining to any buses is more practical there? See; https://www.realtimetrains.co.uk/service/gb-nr:W50380/2024-12-20/detailed#allox_id=0

There are no bi-directional working sections signalled in this area so there'd be no immediate possibility of a wrong line work around a failed unit.

It is yet another reason for more regular users to become regular car users, or workers from home. I hope those who'd gone walking at Edale this morning will get home today. One I met earlier had come by train from Lincoln. It seems trivial in the greater scheme of things, but an 80 year old couple who'd had to walk back from Grindleford to Hathersage in the rain weren't very happy, not least because they'd checked that train had left Dore only 4 minutes late. By about 15.40 the Grindleford departures board said the train was cancelled.

The RTT times can't be taken as gospel. It is possible the train had entered the signal berth containing the platform (hence the arrival time being recorded), while the train itself was still physically in the tunnel.

That's possibly how my correspondent saw the train as cancelled for I'm sure he'd have noticed a train in the platform

Looks like there are still problems in the area especially on Manchester bound services.

The signal berth approaching the tunnel had code ES20 on Traksy a short while ago; does that mean emergency speed restriction of 20mph perhaps? Manchester bound trains have been held at Sheffield for extended periods.

And pity passengers on 1B85 1526 Cleethorpes - Liverpool which was bob on time up to Conisborough but was 49 late passing Mexborough 2.5 miles further on. I presume this was a unrelated problem to that at Totley.

It finally arrived at SHF 55 late and was then held, finally departing 90 late, Was 92 late at Dore , 118 late at Totley Tunnel East, 127 late at Grindleford and 135 late at Hathersage..

Things do seem to have eased up as I type, but looks like some sort of inspection may have been necessary?

195120 did indeed have maintenance issues inside the tunnel related to the breaks being unable to be released. Eventually the driver managed to move the train to Grindleford where passengers departed the service.

It’s currently at Bamford and unable to travel faster than 5mph

The driver of 1B85 removed an obstruction from the track between Dore and Totley Tunnel East

There seems to have been an incident at Swinton. Trains diverted via Thrybergh.
