Hi there. Just received the assessment for conductor post at Wigan. Does anybody know if it is compatable with mobile phones/ android, or must it be done on a tablet or lap top. Thanks.

I would strongly advise you to do it on a PC if you have the opportunity to do it.

If you start the tests on your phone and find out it isn't compatible you may not get a second chance.

Don't hold me to it but try doing one of the practice test on your device. If that works the actual test is likely to.
Personally I wouldn't risk it though just in case.

Thanks for that advice. Managed to complete it on mobile using Google Chrome. Passed it, so just a waiting game now.

How did you find it?

I've not done mine yet, will do it in the next 2 days. I've looked at some of the practice tests and I must admit, as an individual who got A* at GCSE and A at A-Levels (Maths), I thought some of the questions were a little OTT for the role of a conductor, I'm talking about the numerical reasoning in specific. The practice tests made me feel like I'm applying for Medical school aiming to earn 100k a year. I feel like the employer will be missing out on a lot of great candidates due to these tests, candidates who have great experience in customer services.

My other question is, Did you do all the tests in 1 go or do you do them in parts over the next few days?

You passed it? Congratulations bud.
How did you find out so quick, Did you get the feedback straight away?
Usually takes a couple of days for the employer to get back to you.

Hi. As far as I'm aware, once you've started the test, you need to complete it in one go, otherwise it will count as a fail. The verbal reasoning was fairly difficult, but doable. The numerical reasoning seemed to be something that only Carol Vorderman could master. I found it quite tough going, but I've no idea what the pass mark was. Can only assume it's not too high as it was way beyond anything I've encountered before and not in any way related to the role.

They only tell you if you have passed or failed with no further information. No idea when they will tell me if I've been invited to interview. Where did you apply for?

Good luck and I hope you make it through

Hello Dale,

Thanks for your quick response.
I applied for the post at Piccadilly, I'm now in two minds whether to go for it or not as I've been to an interview recently for a Train Driver's role with another TOC (passed my psychometrics privately).

Just a quick question, how many questions were there for the verbal reasoning, was it the usual 30 and 18 for numerical reasoning or did you do more? Apart from them two tests, was there any other additional tests you had to sit?

The reason why I'm asking is because one of the conductors I spoke to a while back advised me there were 'three' parts to the test and according to him they were spread out so he advised me to keep checking my emails once I completed the first assessment.

Thanks in advance.

No, just two parts. May have changed from when he did it. To be honest, I lost count of how many questions there were. I think the practice tests were quite realistic.

Just out of interest, was the Manchester vacancy definitely for Piccadilly. In the past you used to get a choice of Picc or Vic. As far as I'm aware, Picc have shorter days over a five day week, and Vic have longer days over four. I heard you generally get a choice depending on which is most suitable.

Now that you've mentioned it, I believe it was advertised as 'Manchester,' rather than Manchester Piccadilly/Victoria. This is most likely something that will be discussed when being interviewed. Me personally,I'd prefer 4 days, if it meant getting 3 days off.

Hi
I have completed and passed the online assessment for the role of conductor. I believe it was two parts! Has anyone been invited to a interview?

Hi. I passed too but still haven't heard anything. I wouldn't worry yet as that is the norm in the rail industry. I may contact Northern HR if it carries on too long though. Just out of interest, which depot did you apply for. Also, how did you find the maths test. Amazed that I passed that.

I applied in August and passed the tests in the same month. Then got told my application was on hold due to the circumstances and now it’s back to under consideration. I had emailed their HR to check my application hadn’t dropped out of the system just in case. The rail industry will never win any awards for speedy recruitment so it’s just a case of waiting and waiting some more unfortunately.

It's a mystery is rail recruitment. I've had applications in for various roles that have taken nearly a year to get a response from and then ones like I've got now for conductor that took 12 days from application to getting an interview date.
You just never know how long things are going to take and patience is key (which is easier said than done).

Hi
I agree...patience is the key! Regarding the maths assessment, I thought it was rather challenging. I have applied for Wigan. I’m from Warrington, so the journey is favourable then Manchester pic/vic..stations. My application is ‘under consideration’.

I applied for the Manchester vacancies. If given the choice I would go for Vic as I think the shift pattern is preferable, plus that side of Manchester is easier for me to get to. I believe Wigan is a good depot with plenty of route and traction variety.

Have you had an email to say you passed verbal and nunerical assessments. If so please hold fire on contacting HR they're incredibly busy with internal matters and they will contact you in due course
