So as it turns out I didn't get the chance to use a Northern TVM this morning, and ended up buying a Day Saver from the ticket office at Preston. Printed on bog roll ticket, much to my disgust.

Bet that annoyed the gateline staff in the Liverpool stations due to those barriers not having the equipment to read them. Certainly when I got a Saveaway from the ticket office at Chester a few months ago it annoyed the staff whom tried and claim it wasn't a real ticket (as it was printed on paper roll stock)

Just a quick question on the saveaway ticket, in theory could I buy a a ticket from Manchester to Newton Le Willows, and if I had a valid Save away ticket stay on the train to Liverpool Lime Street?

Yes and the train would not be required to stop there either

I didn't have that challenge to deal with s I stayed "airside" all afternoon.

Out of 20 moves, my ticket was only checked once.

Thanks it might be away of saving money next time I go to Liverpool, as I usually end up paying full price for the train and then buying a Merseyside ticket when I am there, even though half my train journey (or more) is already in Merseyside.
