Are these getting refurbished? There's a lot of tired ones around including at least two where the electronic destination blind doesn't work, so the drivers have to stick a piece of A4 paper on the front window to let passengers know which train it is and on one of the PA intercom doesn't work.

Northern must be embarrassed.

Not really they're getting replaced soon, by displaced 333s.

That's just poor maintenance by Northern, the GA 321s which are older than the 322s have reliable destination screens

Northern are also awaiting the arrival of more 331s, so of course they wouldn't spend much money on an old outgoing fleet of trains.

When is the lease officially up? Presumably as they have no new homes to go to it won't be a major problem if they have to stick around a bit longer due to the issues with the 331s.

I didn't know the 331s were coming so apologies. Makes perfect sense to let them stay as they are and not refurbish them

The original assumption was that the 322s would go back at the end of this year, 2019. As far as I am aware that still applies, but I'm happy to be corrected of course!

Does anyone know if the 322s operate on Saturdays, or are they only used during the week? Also which services do they generally work? Thanks

There's not many set diagrams for the 321/322s, generally they could work any of the Aire/Wharfe/Doncaster services. The latter is your best bet for them, but hang around Leeds for any length of time and one will eventually show up.

They were certainly in operation last Saturday. Northern were so short, there was even a 158 covering an electric diagram to Skipton/Ilkley.

Leeds-Doncaster is their original stomping ground. Outside that route, can't say for certain what their diagrams would be, but at least these services were 322s last Saturday:

321 & 322’s are treated as one fleet. The crew diagrams only show 321 as booked traction but the 322’s are treated as a 321 so it could be either. Bear in mind that at one stage there were plans (in Scotrail days I believe) to renumber them as 321501-505 but this never happened. Northern (Serco/Ned days) also planned to renumber them 321904 - 908 but again this never happened.

They work all week as booked traction Leeds - Doncaster and also have booked diagrams on the Aire/Wharfe triangle. It is normal to see at least 7 of the 8 working in a day with a spare at Neville Hill. Some stable at Neville Hill between the peaks if not required to cover for a 333.

Now that 331s have been introduced on Doncaster-Leeds services, presumably the 321s and 322s are now only used on the Aire Valley/Wharfe services? Planning to visit Leeds tomorrow, so hoping to see 322482, 322483 and 322484. If anyone could post the diagrams that would be appreciated.

The first services to/from Ilkley from Leeds have both been running as 321/322s for the last couple of weeks, so you might be able to trace these through to services later in the day, although at least one does spend some time stabled at Leeds during the day.

06:02 Ilkley - Leeds

Its also worth noting that as of this morning, the first Leeds - Doncaster service was still a 321/322, so you may have a good chance on some of these too.

Thanks. I’m not arriving at Leeds until 11am so hopefully will still see some running. I’m also after my last two 144s so hopefully might see them too.

Sheffield is your best bet for your 144s although a handful do work out of Leeds.
I need a Leeds trip myself for the said 322s.
Good luck on your trip tho.

The 06.56 Leeds to Skipton is usually a 321/2 so you could try and figure out the rest of that diagram.

I don't believe all Doncaster services are 331 worked

It's currently just one of the all day diagrams, which is the odd hour departure from Leeds, plus the peak extra of 0654 Doncaster - Leeds and 1757 Leeds - Doncaster

Class 321/9 might be an option for Scotrail to take and use them on the Paisley Canal line

2 units for service and one spare

The WCML 321s pretty much never had them working, that said the information on them was largely spurious given the small number of possible destinations at the time and the presence of platform displays at all stations they served.

322484 is working the 06:02 Ilkley - Leeds this morning, and should return out as the 06:38 Leeds - Ilkley, so that might help you track at least this one through the morning.

In case anyone is interested, I saw all five 322s, plus 321902 and 321903, most of them within about 2 hours. Both Leeds-Doncaster services were 321/322s. The peak extra was 331108. I also saw one of my last two 144s and one of my last four 142s. Just 142015/029/042 and 144021 to go now. Thanks for everyone who posted information.

As a daily commuter on the Ilkley line, it's definitely seemed as if there were a lot more 321/2s out the last few days. On Sunday I went from Menston to Bingley to walk along the canal and it took four trains for me to see a 333 - there was a time when the dusty bins had no work on the Aire/Wharfe services at weekends.

Yesterday my 1703 Leeds-Ilkley was a 322, which happens about once every two or three months, and both yesterday and today there have been cancellations due to unit shortages.

I'd agree with this, in the last couple of weeks the 321/322s have been worked a lot more on triangle services.

That may be down to the 333 refurb, there's usually a period when 2 are out of service with the one coming back not entering service for a week or so. The 333s aren't the most reliable train anyway so I suspect their availability is around 80%

Back to Scotrail for 322?

With 385 going to be tested on Ayrshire lines could 322 and 321/9 be used for Neilston and Paisley Canal services (not peak Neilston as wont fit turnback) but would give 4 car Neilston off peak services

There have been noticeably more 321/322s running in the last few weeks than in previous ones, well into the refurbishment programme. Given that the 331s are now starting to come into service I wonder if the regular 321/322 diagrams on the triangle services might be in line for 331s once all necessary clearances and training is completed.
