it looks as though Manningtree is a good splitting point on the Norwich to London route but does the train need to call there with split tickets? Is anywhere else better to split at? Thanks in advance.

You may use two or more tickets for one journey as long as they cover the entire journey and one of them is either a Season Ticket or a leisure travel pass (which means a multi-journey ticket which is at valid at least 3 days in 7 day period) or both tickets are Zonal Tickets then your train needs to call at Mannngtree.

If you are travelling with ordinary (advance, single or return) tickets then your train needs to stop at the station where your tickets split.

Might you have to change trains anywhere? If so, you are covered for delays even with advance tickets, provided you allowed enough time for the connection you missed (I mean, allowed what WOULD have been enough time under normal conditions).

Yes Manningtree is a good and well-known splitting point on this route. Almost all Norwich-London trains stop at Manningtree so the requirement to stop with many ticket combinations is usually no problem. Off the top of my head the ones that don't are 07:40 and 17:30 from Norwich & 16:30 and 17:00 from London, on a weekday.

Plus you can use a Network Railcard from Manningtree to London, provided the fare is over the £13 minimum in the week.
