Hi all,
I bet this has been discussed somewhere else but I visited Norwood Junction today to find that the station has a 4 note Jingle increasing in pitch which plays as a passing train approaches platforms 3 and 4.

I haven’t noticed this at any other Southern/Overground stations and from the videos I watched, this appears to be fairly old signal block driven system (it seemed to know when the train was times to stop)

Does anyone know why it exists just here? The standard ‘train approaching’ announcement by voice was also made at the same time.

Sounds like the old arpeggio that was used a lot over the Southern network in the past to warn of non-stop trains? No idea why it still exists there, mind.

The PIS that was installed by Connex did that, including at the Southern side of Clapham Jn before the whole system there was replaced. I think it's a great idea having a distinct sound for a warning rather than just Anne waffling on.

Notably it was played from a speaker on the display and not on the PA. Is it still the old style flickery orange 3 line display there?

Struggling to find any footage on YouTube at the moment but sure one of us will find it soon enough. Remember the wording well (I think!): “Stand well away from the edge of platform X. The approaching train is not scheduled to stop at this station”.

That and the other british rail chimes are very nostalgic to me, does anyone have full recordings of them?

This was also at shoreham by sea before the ditra system was removed to announce a train was ready to leave.

I’ve also heard it at West Croydon. Worth noting that London Overground operate more or less the same CIS system (just slightly adapted) in this area from when this horn would’ve been originally rolled out. I wonder if it’s still at a few of the other LO stations down there, like New Cross Gate or Crystal Palace.

As a NXG driver, yes, it's used at all ARL managed stations between New Cross Gate and Crystal Palace/West Croydon. Hear it many times a day when I have windows open or changing ends.
