I can remember as a child wondering who was Luckie Mucklebackit ?

3rd. Carabinier sounded like a particular coach in a train.

Did Wandering Willie ever get where he wanted to ?

Was Thunderer a really noisy engine ?

I had no idea Giggleswick was a town.

It's amazing how in later years you can remember army regiments because they were engines.

People on here must have some favourite names be it steam or diesel or electric.

There was a King Arthur that rings to mind a rather pleasing image of a jolly gentleman waving a green flag: 741 Joyous Gard
But my all time favourite: The Coal Merchants Association of Scotland.

Tally-ho, Rodney, Nettle, Surprise and New fly...apparently named after stage coaches: marvellous (actually maybe that was one)!

suppose as a native of the north east, Gateshead's 47/4's, were relevant to me, cos these loco's were invariably used predominately on the Newcastle- Liverpool trains, so probably had a good majority of duff bashing mileage on these loco's. The highlighted ones being particular faves, one being the proud nation Im in, the Geordie Republic of England and the other being my Footy team, Rail Riders, was also personal fave, mainly because I joined them as a kid and spent a small fortune getting their vouchers to travel all over the place.

As a kid I was fascinated with Deltic names and when i looked in locoshed, I hadnt seen any 50's then but seeing names as Conquerer, Thunderer, Defiant and the likes, sounded truly fantastic.

I think as only 22 Deltics were built they should all have had names that matched rather than a mixture of regiments and racehorses.
