This is a simple question.

How many stations can you think of that are next to each other but do not have a direct train. In other words you can go from one to the other without passing through any other station. The direct train does not have to go by the direct route.

Two that are next to each other are Briton Ferry and Llangennech (if you go via the Swansea District). These do have a direct train but via Swansea so is not allowed.

Ninian Park to Pontyclun is allowed it is possible to go between the two without passing through another station but there is no direct service.

Ninian Park to Pontyclun is allowed it is possible to go between the two without passing through another station but there is no direct service.

I'd say it isn't allowed, because the platforms at Ninian Park are not on the mainline, so a train can't pass through both sets of platforms.

Another one like this is Bethnal Green to Stratford, and Carnforth to Oxenholme (both only have platforms on the branch).

True. Separate entries:
Finsbury Park-Canonbury,
Dalston Kingsland-London Fields.
Hackney Wick-Liverpool St.
Cannon St-Waterloo East
Tulse Hill-Streatham Hill (in this direction only)
South Milford-Doncaster (via the Selby Canal curve)
--- old post above --- --- new post below ---
0632 SX Victoria-Chichester calls at both.
In that case, Littlehampton-Arundal is valid in that direction only.

If we're talking freight-only curves, Manea-Shippea Hill/Downham Market, since it is possible to get between the two while avoiding Ely, but all passenger trains reverse in the station.
Salhouse/Brundall Gardens-Diss might also count, if you allow for the curve at Crown Point.

Would Moston and Ashton count? (I think that theres a curve around there somewhere)

It is allowed as there is a chord at Leckwith that rejoins the mainline west of Cardiff Canton.

Indeed there is and coming from the Moston direction, Brewery Junction is on the left hand side, just before the former Miles Platting station, and this was built in 1906 by the Lancashire and Yorkshire Railway. I think that Newton Heath depot would find this useful to get stock to the Stalybridge area.

I have used this junction just once in 1982 on one of the many special trains that British Rail ran for the Manchester Rail Travel Club from 1980 to 1984.

I could technically claim Pewsey and Frome, being as they are consecutive stations if you use the Westbury avoiding line but not the Frome avoiding line.

Different combinations of the two avoiders lead to Pewsey and Bruton, and Westbury and Bruton, also working.

Beauly to Carrbridge/Nairn avoiding Inverness.
Lockerbie to Carstairs (in the northbound direction only).
Rutherglen to Carmyle.
Drem to Dunbar.
Willington to Peartree.
Bottesford to Ancaster (all scheduled services reverse at Grantham).
Streatham Hill to Tulse Hill.
St Johns to Hither Green/Ladywell(?); I believe services at St Johns all go via Lewisham.
