Good evening all, long time lerker first time poster. I've found a lot of your posts / articles extremely helpful as I've been applying for a job in the industry for the past 2 years, and have an interview next week for Network Rail. I've been doing my research on the NTS at NR while also trying to apply the Star technique to some answers I hope to provide, but I have to admit I'm absolutely bricking it. Finally getting through to an interview and I don't want to miss anything out, have any of you recently had an interview for an operative (track maintenance) role recently?
Another question, would you consider it presumptuous asking about shift rosters etc at interview as the job description is vague.
Thanks in advance

Hello and welcome to the board.
Congratulations on getting to the interview stage.
I can't help you with what questions you might face. However I would say it is indeed important to raise the question of shift rosters. That demonstrates that you have thought about the job requirements seriously. If you have previous experience of working unsocial hours, bring that up to demonstrate your reliability. Anything else you can drop in to prove that you are reliable, conscientious, and a good timekeeper would all be bonus points.
Good luck.

Yes thank you, ecstatic to get this far but certainly know I've still a long way to go!!

Excellent regarding rosters, this is what I thought too but then didn't want it to come across in interview that it potentially bothered me, I am genuinely interested as I have seen such a variance across this forum.

Thank you for your response

The safety vision is another one you need to learn along with the lifesaving rules.

Learn the 10 lifesaving rules.
Have scenarios in your head of when you faced a difficult situation in the work place. When you have worked in a team etc. Read up on NWR’s safety vision. just safety, safety, safety.

best of luck in your interview!

Thank you both, I was reading from the NR website around the lifesaving rules and safety vision so its been very helpful. I've actually been impressed with the website and information on there, so I will continue to research.

Hi, so pleased you started this thread IP44. I too have been trying to get into the railway in various roles for a good while. I applied in September for an operative role in Preston. There are 2 positions BK and SM (s). I know SM is signal matainance, no idea what BK is. Anyway just received an email saying my application is with a hiring manager and my status has changed from test completed to application under consideration for assessment 2. So fingers crossed. Good luck to you IP44.

Yes it's bloody difficult isn't it!! From all of the advice I've seen on here, persistence seems to be key so hopefully it will pay off. Thank you and wish you all the best

Just wondering if anyone can shed some light on the actual role I have applied for. The advert is operative ×2
BK SM(S).

Im guessing SM is signal maintenance. No idea what BK or (S) stands for. Any help greatly appreciated.
