Today, Nederlandse Spoorwegen (NS) announced that they have inked a deal with French builder Alstom for the delivery of 79 new intercity trains. These trains will enter commercial service in 2021, and cost over € 800 million.

The trains will be based upon the proven Coradia platform, of which Alstom has already sold hundreds of trains throughout the continent.

Some characteristics about the ICNG:
  • Maximum service speed: 200 km/h.
  • 79 trainsets: 49 sets of 5 carriages + 30 sets of 8 carriages.
  • Capacity: in total, 25,000 seats divided over two classes.
  • Usage area: core network as well as the domestic part of the Dutch high speed line (Amsterdam - Breda).
  • The "zone" concept (as first seen in the renovated double deckers) will be added to these trains, as well as art by Dutch artists.
  • Capable of operating under 1500 V DC and 25 kV AC
  • Train protection systems: ATB-EG and ERTMS
  • Features:
    • wheelchair accessible toilets
    • level entry
    • wifi
    • passenger information displays
    • separate waste collection bins
    • LED lighting which adapts to daylight
    • 230V + USB wall sockets in 1st and 2nd class
    • more space for bags and suitcases.
    • Camera's and call for aid buttons will be fitted throughout the train to improve security.
  • Additional trains can be ordered, including variants for Germany and/or Belgium.

  • H2 2017 - 2023: series production of trains.
  • 2019 - 2022: type testing on Dutch networks, staff training, prepare for entry in service

They look alright, and should be more reliable than the AB Fyra units.

They will eventually go, but not all at the same time. The ICM-IV series (the 4 coach units) are younger than the ICM-III (3 coach) so will remain in use for a few years more. They'll probably be replaced by a follow-on order of ICNG.

They've all been moved back to the old AnsaldoBreda factory in Italy. There were thoughts that they could be improved and sold to another operator. NS has a clause in their settlement that states Ansaldo (now Hitachi) has to pay them if they're resold.

There's a video here of them back in Italy

It appears only the Thalys is high speed between Amsterdam and Brussel. Do not forget often they do not even reach 300 kilometer per hour between Schiphol and Rotterdam. From Barendrecht to Antwerpen it is only high speed for 15 minutes.

Update: Today's Railways Europe reports that the ex-Fyra V250 trains are being tested in Italy at the moment. FS may be using them for Frecciargento services.

I'm wondering if they've had all the modifications made to them that was recommended in the report NS commissioned.

Does anyone know what the plan is for the TRAXX 186 locos once these new things come in, given NS have just acquired a load of new ones?

The ones that are being leased will be returned to the ROSCOs, the plan is to either sell the remaining ones (numbered in the 186.0xx range) or offer them on the leasing market.

The locos will have a high residiual value and can easily be used for another 30 years, so it wasn't that bad of an investment.

Looks like the failed V250s have found a new home....

Well in the south of Italy there is less chance of snow in the winter. And as said; the trains will not be used on a real HSL. Well; at least they fall apart in Italy than!

Ferrovie.it reports that Trenitalia have denied the rumours.
