Don’t risk travelling over night in a seat on this train. Whilst they are comfortable, they do not make for a refreshing nights sleep. Done it twice, as there was no berth accommodation left.
Did it once in the seats northbound overnight. Next to a bloke who snored and farted from Craigieburn to Campbelltown.
My advice, do a daytime trip, or fly.
There's only 1 XAM sleeping car on each train with 9 double bed compartments at the Melbourne end of the train next to the locomotive.
I've done overnight in the seat. Way up to Sydney very little in the way of sleep. On the way back slightly better. But daytime is better. You get to see the country.
If you must travel overnight take a sleeper. Bookings open 12 months in advance. Except at holiday times you should be ok. All compartments are 2 berth and the ensuite is shared with the neighbouring compartment.
The day train is preferable. It is a good trip and there is plenty of changing scenery.
As others have said the daytime trains are definitely a lot better. You get to see all the scenery. If you do the nighttime sleeper trains you will miss all that.
