i was grosmont a few months ago with the family on the way back from whitby, co-incidently when 9f COCK O' THE NORTH was getting its name plates unveiled. i got some cracking photos of it leaving the tunnel heading to pickering. i suppose any of the platforms and veiwing areas are going to be good anyway. some of the other guys on the forum will know some better places to go along the route, i just find it hard dragging a 2 yr old and a 7yr old about as well as the wife. lol

Buy an O/S map from the shop at the station in Grosmont - You can walk all but one of these sites easily form the line

There are quite a few good spots on the "RailTrail" i think it is called between Grosmont and Goathland. It is a 3.5 mile walk (ish - Uphill from Grosmont, so if lazy get train to Gathland and walk DOWN;))

Frist spot is next to the MPD at Grosmont (you can sometimes get a decent picture form the walkway around the sheds too):

If you carry on along the trail you can get some decent shots of the trains working up the hill but the next decent spot close to the line is Beckhole. It is off the trail, but sign posted but is a hike uphill however it is on the incline to Goathland and you get some good exhaust at times:

Follow the trail on and you get to Goathland. A really nice spot is on the bridge or on the hill leading up to the main moors road BUT it will be busy:

Also good is Darnholme ( one of my favorites but very popular!). Go thorugh the station, cross the line, follwo the path up the side of the moor and walk for about 5 minutes back towards Goathland. On the crest of the hill you will see this:

Water Ark bridge/Thomasson Foss is a good spot. Hard to get to if it has been raining and some steep terrain but worth it. Plenty of spots along the paths around there. Be prepared for a hike but:

There is always the paths through Newtondale:

or if you are feeling really adventrous Skelton Tower. Dont walk it from Levisham, it is like a mountain! Park on the moor and walk over! You will need a good lens:

Or try levisham station intself. The field alongside the line north of the station is good:

Hope that helps!
