At Elephant and Castle station they have removed a sign on Platform island 2/3 and they have this poster beneath. I thought someone might be interested in such a poster. I have seen another sign removed and there is some oul poster for Radio Capital FM with a picture of a young Chris Tarrant so I didn't bother taking a photo of that as it is not railway related.

Edit: I cannot get the picture to work. I will have a tinker and then come back to it.

It's an old Network South East poster with a drawing of a 317, detailing frequency of service to Cambridge from Kings Cross.

I can't help wondering if anyone thinks it relates to today, and has tried to phone that number

It's not the first old poster to be found. I remember at Fareham a couple of poster display cabinets were removed to reveal two BR posters from the 70s.

When I first saw this thread title, I thought some unkind person was commenting on my age.

Someone had to do it. I've just dialled 01-928 5100.

"The number you have dialled has not been recognised, please hang up and try again."

What do you mean, "not recognised"? It's there, bold as brass on a poster at Elephant and Castle....

Got a similar response when I tried 245001, seen on a poster at Watford West last year:

245001 (01923 245001 that is, but just 245001 if you are dialling from a landline in the Watford area) works okay on my phone although its the number for Swift Rent a Car in Watford. Maybe they think that hiring a car from Swift is appropriate bearing in mind there are no longer any trains running there.

Well, when I tried it last year, with the area code, I got a recorded, "number not recognised" message.

Whilst I didn't need car hire, bus times may've been appropriate, seeing as I'd just missed the service in the left hand picture! No major worries though as I was heading the other way on foot to Croxley Green (pic), thence Croxley MET back to London!

That would of course be 020 7928 5100 now which too isn't recognised now but Google suggests it was once various things from being a number for SWT at Waterloo, an alternative for National Rail Enquiries, and a number for Eurotunnel.

When work started on Blackfriars, underneath the new plastic encased poster frames was old adverts, untouched for years.....

You'd have to convert it to a modern day London number to stand any chance of it working; either 0207 928 5100 or 0208 928 5100 should do the trick.

<pedant>020 7928 5100, 020 8928 5100 (or indeed 020 3928 5100).

That number would previously have been WATerloo 5100. As 01 928 5100 it would have become 071 928 5100, 0171 928 5100 and then eventually 020 7928 5100.</pedant>

Similar old posters have recently been uncovered at Richmond.

Link HERE.

There is also one on Platform 9 at York. It is behind a vending machine and the top part of an old paper poster advertising half fare travel for under 25's is visible. Will get a picture when next there.

Do you think anyone has been deceived by the York poster?

"With Direct Rail you can look, plan and book trains to Watford West simply and securely online."

There you are then. The internet says you can so I did. Had a very long wait, the weedkiller train clearly hadn't visited recently and in the end I caught a charabanc instead. I think I'll write a letter of complaint to Mr Stanier about the state of his company's line.

Until recently at Middlesbrough when they did the station renovation, some old signs were visible through windows on an old staircase, this has now been opened up.

IIRC, I believe one of the signs advertised the "Cleveland Executive"
