Hello all,

A friend was doing a house clearance and has uncovered a lot of all old route vhs videos belonging to their grandfather (British Rail Southern Region) and also Kodak slides on their carousels. I would guess these are from the late 1980s maybe.

I would like them to go to a good home if someone wanted to collect them. I am located in Basingstoke, they are in a box as per the photo.

Some of the routes covered are:

Waterloo - Staines
Reading - Clapham
Waterloo - Basingstoke
St Albans - Blackfriars
Blackfriars - East Croydon

If anyone is interested in them, please let me know. I can also deliver locally.

Might still be a small demand for VHS videos at bric a brac shops at preserved railway lines if you donate them? If so, that way it ensures anyone who buys them wants them (so a good home) and any money paid goes to a good cause, said preserved railway.

I expect the slides and the videos are interesting, given the changing scene since they may have been taken / filmed

PS - welcome to the forum and thanks for posting.

I'm guessing the Mid Hants Railway at Alton would be your nearest preserved Railway if you are in Basingstoke.
Assuming they have a railwayana or bric a brac outlet on site there.

For the slides, have you tried Colourail?
good idea!
I see they have a helpful statement on their website

Collections Wanted
Colour-Rail is always interested in expanding its collection, so if you are looking for a good home for your slides and negatives of any transport related subject please e mail [email protected] and we will contact you or call 0121 453 6518.

Colour-Rail is committed to preserving as many images as possible for posterity regardless of their age. We are just as interested in a digital picture taken in the last couple of years as a negative from 1900- they will all, in due course, be an interesting record of the history of transport.

We cannot over emphasise the importance of protecting collections (large or small) so that they do not end up in the skip. Not only is there the risk that the nearest and dearest might not realise the historic importance of the photographs, but in fact there is a much greater threat, and that is deterioration. We have lost count of the thousands of slides and negatives that we have seen that have deteriorated beyond redemption. The loft or damp cupboard are not the best places to store such material. Almost regardless of the conditions, some colour emulsions change colour or fade, but if we can get to them in time, modern technology may be able to save those images. Indeed, never 'write off' any picture unless it is out of focus as it may be recoverable- 'thin' negatives and 'pink' slides can still produce good pictures.

The slides and negatives have irreplaceable images of our transport history, and it is important that they are preserved for posterity and can be made available to future generations. Many of us are reluctant to part with our cherished memories and they lie in a cupboard or loft for many years, unfortunately in many cases until it is too late.. Particularly in the case of negatives, if you have the print, will you ever use the negative again and with slides perhaps you now have these scanned onto your computer?

If you have your own collection then you need to take action NOW, either to put in writing what you would like to happen it in due course, or if you want it to have a good home now and be there for others to enjoy, contact us. Similarly if you know of collections sitting in a drawer or loft, please talk to the owners about what they are going to do to ensure the long term survival of those treasured images.

If you are however reading this with the painful task of sorting out a loved one's effects then do not throw those slides and negatives in the bin-please e-mail or phone us now. Let their work live on
