Fun-diddly-fun there bud!

Reminds me of the same sort of fun I had in May 2004 on Manchester - Stockport runs. Several HSTs, a couple of 87s, a 90 or two, 31s...The good ol' days! Relived it a touch with 90022 and 82131 on the 1524 to New Street as far as Stockport from Manchester. Great bash!

Only Manchester - Stockport?!? You would of heard them thrash if you went to Macclesfield. 110mph HST. (We on the Northern WCML prefer more curves hence Lower Speed ;)).

Greater Manchester Rail Rangers aren't valid beyond Stockport! Hence the bash was only to Stockport. Done the rest of the route before with top and tail 90s anyway!

Besides, there was more important number crunching and haulages to get in the area, so going beyond Stockport was pointless anyway! It was a nice fast run anyway, very enjoyable!

Wayfarers are vaild up to Macclesfield. Don't know about Rail Rangers. Stockport or Bramhall sounds about right.

I wasn't willing to waste money on a Wayfarer. Besides, Hereford's ticket office staff couldn't find the ranger on their system, to the extent they thought I made the fare up! Eventually it was found! So I wasn't willing to ask if my CDR was valid via New Street or waste time with a Wayfarer either!

Rangers are indeed only valid to Stockport on Virgin and FTPX services, valid much more on Northern services to the west and north of Manchester.

Nice log 50149, got me thinking of recent history...
Opening day of an East Mids in 2003

25/10/03 Sa
90028 2355 Glasgow-Euston
321421 0539 Euston-Birmingham, L.Buzz-M.Keynes
87006 0605 Euston-Glasgow, M.Keynes-Stoke
Bloody glad this (famous S47) produced, was surprised to see stopping at Stoke vice Stafford!
All trains diverted Colwich-Stoke-Kidsgrove with addit stops at Lichfield. (Lichfield had 2-3tph stopping in each direction!)

Crossed 47840 on up emcars at Rugeley
57309} 0710 Liverpool-Euston Stoke-Lichfield
87012d}
Damn, i'd rather have had the seven, soon got bored and bailed off !
87031 0705 Euston-Preston (15L), Lichfield-Stoke
87009 0540 Carlisle-Euston
87022 0640 Carlisle-Euston, Stoke-M.Keynes
This was nasty wedged coffins
87027 1050 Euston-Liverpool,M.keynes-Stoke
47816} 0610 Glasgow-Euston (approx 150L)
xxxxxd} -crossed this at Stone.
Long fester at a monsoonal Stoke. Flagged a grey skoda on some up Manchester
87017} 0934 Glasgow-Euston(35L),Stoke-M.Keynes
87035d}
Rug 47828/57308 47843
87018 1315 Liverpool-Euston
87009 1505 Euston-Glasgow,M.Keynes-Lichfield
Result, this was fresh out of store and worked for just a month or so.
My phone had the right idea and stayed on to Glasgow for mileage!!!-later retreived!
87013 1530 Preston-Euston,Lichfield-M.Keynes
Knew a Lichfield bail was needed for guaranteed seven back-could have had
90039 (IIRC, it was grey anyway) back from Stoke but otherwise i believed it would all be skoda/pendo (by covering diagrams)
321406 1706 Birmingham-Euston,M.Keynes-L.Buzz

There are some phots on my fotopic no doubt if you trawl it!

Ah yes 2003, was looking back in an old notepad of mine and brought back memories of a day at Swinton I had on April 16th. This was what I saw from 9:00am-5:00pm (minus 66's)
47737 and 47776 Top and tail Serco
60059-Steel
60009-NP Hoppers
60032-Steel
60098-RMC
60082-Steel Coils
56120-Engineers
37521 and scruffy 37510 and 37515 straight from the Thornaby scrapline to BH.
60079-RMC
60008-Steel
37521-L/E

Wow, so many 60's in one day, they were the days when the Lackenby-Llanwern steel was ALWAYS a 60...

Was there. I'm pretty sure it's the Wasterloo Milford Haven train which now no longer runs.

FNW service Euston-Man Vic/Rochdale/Blackpool . Not sure where it split, it only lasted a year or so.
(Virgin didn't like the competition, it was RA Warrington-Tamworth-Watford-Euston to avoid anyone actually using it)

Was solid 158 although a few times a 156 would be kicked out for a WCML thrash.

FNW also did some Euston-Man Apts, lasted a bit longer, 322 operated although a fair few 309s worked thru, these were hellfire runs RA Euston-Tamworth or somewhere on a Clacton!

The Wales and West - as they were then - services from Waterloo to Bristol/Wales ran via the SWML calling at Clapham, Woking and Basingstoke then branching off at Salisbury and travelling via the same route as the current SWT Bristol services via Trowbridge. There were three per day. I remember seeing them pass through Farnbrough. Along with Anglia Railways' 'Crosslink' service they were the only things not to call at Farnborough during the airshows back then when SWT used to make practically all trains call here.

I hardly think any of those stations are in wales ;)

Might be because they started in London. ;)

Some W&W services started at London Waterloo and went via the GWML, via Kenny O so had a calling pattern of Kensington Olympia, Reading, Swindon, Bristol Parkway, etc.

I agree with You 50149, the good old days when the 319s were allocated to the Watford (Tring) Diagrams
I remember when the Electrostars were allocated on the BEXs so some of 319/2s were allocated on Watfords and it was possible to do first class with a standard class tickets as first class on Watford-Brighton was declassified until those Plastic Green Creatures arrived on the WFJ-Brighton diagram

Speaking of Ex BEX 319s, 319220 is now in Southern Green Livery now still at Wolverton, so that makes 2 Creche Units remaining

Yes, but 9/10 guards (VT, not Northern) dont know where (or more worryingly what) a GM Ranger is, approximately half of VT guards will sell them to you if you ask for one on a Voyager between Macc & Manchester (as a friend of mine does regularly). I did however once hear a story of pleading (over about £2) when a group of bashers had GM Rangers, and a nb tractor had produced on a XC spoon turn, they wanted to travel to Macc, however the guard (who must have been rather desparate) wasn't having it. I'm not sure what happend in the end!

Can you imagine that Eurostar service at Glasgow Central? Just picture being on the concourse, at the till in WHSmith buying your newspaper, and the announcer comes on saying something like this:

'The train at platform 1 is the 2000 Eurostar service to Paris Gare Du Nord. Calling at Motherwell, Carlisle, Preston, Crewe, London Waterloo International and Paris Gare Du Nord. First Class accommodation is towards the rear of this train. Would all passengers travelling on this service please have all tickets and passports ready for inspection at the Eurostar check-in point.

Platform 1 for the 2000 Eurostar service to Paris Gare Du Nord.'

I don't know about you lot, but I'd have loved to see it and hear it.
