I saw it in harrogate last week, then the following day, at York at the NRM, then at Thirsk where I saw it arriving behind Scots Guardsman, before following it into the town centre. Dissapointed not had chance to them light the cauldron at the end of each day. Got some photos and will put them on my flickr site and put a link up.

I dont think it is a waste of money. It will be years before we get the Olympics in this country again.

Well look how much it's cost the taxpayer. £9 billion. That's £150000 per head based on a population of 60million people. Odds that 50million aren't going to see the Olympic stadium. Now say it isn't a waste of money.

Look at it this way. While the torch is being relayed around the country, how many people will go to see it? While most will go home after the torch has been past, those who have come from out of town will possibly make an impulse purchase at somepoint during the day, helping the local economy. Now this is happening in every part of the country ....

Another thing. How many people will visit England because of the Olympics? How much will they spend????

I'd have to agree with you there. I saw it in Leeds on Sunday (was invited - would have been churlish to refuse). Left me cold - overhyped - not much to see. At least I can say I've seen it. To be charitable, if anyone was selected to carry the torch - good luck to them. Ditto, anyone who has bought/won tickets. It won't happen again in your lifetime.

I'm not surprised you think it is a waste of money after working that out. £150,000 per head? Try again.

what's so special about the Games, exactly? It's an incredible celebration of incredible Sporting achievement? Well, if you're excited by Sport, I suppose you might find it mildly exciting. Why should anyone else, though?

Tomonthetrain - just go away. If you don't like the Olympics, don't look at an Olympics topic! Simple, really.

I saw the torch in Ilfracombe, where it stopped for an hour or so. Was great to see so many people turn out to see it, and there was a genuine buzz amongs people in the town. And how does it leave a legacy? Well, apart from all the sporting activities that were taking place, all the TV coverage (not least from William Shatner) meant that Ilfracombe has never had such publicity, and is already benefiting from it.

I saw it in Lytham last Saturday, it's probably not something I am going to see again so I'm glad I went.

meanhwile, the Elite Met Police Squad are getting tough on crime ...

The Olympic torch’s security team got to grips with a cyclist

The Olympic torch’s security team got to grips with a cyclist, who according to police “attempted to enter the security bubble around the torchbearer.”

Met Police, who take responsibility for the Olympic torch's security workers, said of the incident in Suffolk on Saturday: "A male on a pedal cycle attempted to enter the security bubble around the torchbearer. The Met's torch security team prevented him from gaining access to the torchbearer and the male fell off his bike. He immediately got back on his bike and left," they told the BBC.

isn't it good that the Elite Met Police Squad can spare the manpower and resiources to protect this Incredible symbol of Nazi iconography? Good job there's nothing more important they coudl be doing, like investigating Crime, isn't it ....

The Met police are just another police force. They have been tasked with assisting the security team of the torch relay.

It is not the whole force out there protecting it. If it wasnt them it would be another police force. Are you saying that the runners on this relay which has townsfolk out in their droves to watch it, should not be protected by a security team from people who may want to attack them and maybe do some harm?

Terrible if you are advocating violence to another man.

But hey, dont let that stop you from pushing your agenda of being against the Olympics for you hyping up a story to suit your own propaganda, like a good old Daily Mail newspaper

Heavens, the drivel never stops.

Dorset Police are advising communities to stay safe during Torch Relay celebrations when the flame arrives in the county on Thursday.
They are urging the public to wear appropriate clothing and footwear, apply an SPF if the sun comes out and drink plenty of water when travelling to see the Torch Relay.

Yes, sir! Should we all salute as well? :p

Far be it for me to put words in someone's mouth, but it seems to me that Schnellzug was merely pointing out that at a time of cuts in front line policing, with more to come, is it appropriate for resources to be used on what is the equivalent of a national parade?

I don't necessarily agree with the view, as you could apply the sam,e arguments to every event that requires a police presence.

Despite this, I think it is a reasonable view to express. As is questioning the value of the Olympics.

The question is, why does the Met dedicate a squad to going all round the country escorting the thing? Wouldn't it be more sensible for the local police in each area to do it? Surely LOCOG aren't trying to argue that the local police forces can't be trusted to protect it? why do they need a "security bubble"?is it just yet more self-aggrandisement by LOCOG?
