The above-mentioned site is the only way to obtain tickets ahead of the usual sale horizons.

Advances that have gone on sale in the normal way, and walk-up tickets, can be bought from any staffed station.

Sorry, not the special 2012 Games Train Tickets.
Exclusive fares for 2012 Games spectator ticket holders

Train companies have been working with the Olympic Delivery Authority to offer special rate fares and more flexible tickets to holders of 2012 Games spectator tickets.

2012 Games train tickets have been on sale since Friday 24 June 2011 via a dedicated website www.nationalrailgamestravel.co.uk

2012 Games Train Tickets will not be available to buy at stations, on train company websites, on other online retailing websites, from travel agents or from telesales centres.

Customers who are unable to buy tickets online will be able to buy tickets through a dedicated National Rail Games Travel contact centre. Contact numbers are as follows:

Ticket Enquiries, including Group Travel: 0844 693 2898*
Assisted Travel: 0844 693 2899

Lines are open 08:00 – 20:00 7 days a week (excluding Christmas Day / Boxing Day). * Calls to these numbers from landlines are charged at the local rate and may be recorded.

2012 Games Train Tickets can be bought for travel between 18 July 2012 and 14 September 2012 inclusive. They will not be sold for travel outside of these dates.

Tickets will be available for journeys from any National Rail station in Great Britain to London and the following co-Host Cities holding 2012 Games events: Coventry, Newcastle, Glasgow, Manchester, Cardiff and Weymouth. Tickets can only be sold to customers who have a 2012 Games event ticket.

There's an interesting article in the 2nd May issue of RAIL magazine, saying that by the middle of April the train companies had expected 1 million Olympics spectators to have bought these special advance tickets through that website, but only 85,000 had done so. Quite a disparity there. Apparently they are blaming the lack of take-up on the fact that they aren't allowed to mention the Olympics in their advertising, hence all this "London Games" stuff. It certainly seems that the OP in this thread wasn't aware that the tickets have been on sale for almost a year, and was expecting them to become available within the normal 12 week booking horizon.

I'd have said it's because the man on the street thinks the only place to get cheap train tickets in advance is thetrainline, and that's not been selling them until very recently!

That's LOCOG for you. These fares haven't been well publicised as the TOCs do not want to fall foul of LOCOG's greasy tentacles. I have nothing polite to say about LOCOG - but they are shooting themselves in the foot by refusing to allow TOCs to use "Olympics" to sell specially discounted rail fares - taking people to LOCOG's own events!
