KJ 47361 IS a huge one in there. Only had it once myself, when it rocked up on the great 143 eplacements. Had it from Newcastle-Hartlepool n back. I wàs only gonna take it to Sunderland but thought sod it. Had to walk home from Newcastle, which takes a good hour to do. Which took even longer cos I called in at Gateshead shed on the way home. A pair of big 37s, there to AJM. Not jealous at all of that.:E. Mr Train, I'd put it down to being more youthful than us ole farts. You may have missed out on these but at least you can say, well I have more youth on my side:lol:
Again, sorry no date.
Newcastle-Carlisle 47xxx(may have been 47205 it was definitely an NB one)
Carlisle-Glasgow Central 27059
Glasgow-Carlisle 86204
Carlisle stock shunt 08690(we asked the shunter bloke if we could get on and told if we stood on the opposite side he was, no problem)
Carlisle-Dumfires 47472
Dumfries-Carlisle 47550
Carlisle-Newcastle 25044 dragging dead 101 DMU

AJM580 - nice little trip out there although shame you missed the second pair of 37s.

I'll continue with another delve into "The Haulage Book", this time, it's 1994 and I fancied a session reducing my Networker requirements.
3482 Wimbledon - Waterloo
465218+466023 Waterloo East - London Bridge
465029+466039 London Bridge - Charlton
465239+466034 Charlton - London Bridge
465012+465208 London Bridge - New Cross
465002+465225 New Cross - Lewisham
465238+465242 Lewisham - London Bridge
3187+3472 London Bridge - Charing Cross
465235+465247 Charing Cross - London Bridge
465050+465216 London Bridge - Lewisham
465178+465243 Lewisham to London Bridge
465038+465048 London Bridge - Waterloo East
3482 Waterloo - Wimbledon

While it seems like a Networker fest, it would be another three years before my last 466 would fall (466028 on 7th June 1997) and nine years before the final 465 (465157 on 11 April 2003) succumbed to my red pen.

Wow, some great stuff amongst all that lot.
Just what I was hoping for.

I'll just pick out a few highlights.

47403 - I see you had a couple of decent runs on one of my biggest misses - despite it being common (even my brother, who has no interest in railways had it when he was hanging around with my mates) I never managed to get 31444 in the book.
Also, 25044 - I've gone even greener at reading that!

433N - some great memories, there. You're not the only one looking forward to D5910 appearing.
I thoroughly enjoyed that video of ALYCIDON as well :)

AJM580 - That looks like a good day. At least 37254 is still with us, so if it's still required, there's hope.
I never had 37677, so some more jealousy there.

Keith - I would certainly have enjoyed that move with the 50s and a couple of my favourite 47s; 47633 ORION and my highest mileage loco of all time, 47613.

Anyway, my moves from the 28th of August include these:

1995:
A Pathfinder mini-tour after the main participants had bailed for the Basford Hall open day, which we had already done.
90139 Crewe - Wigan
59003/59101 Wigan - Crewe

2002:
Another day of my all-liner, starting and finishing on the sleeper.
67030 Edinburgh - Inverness
158724 Inverness - Dingwall
158715 Dingwall - Inverness
158704 Inverness - Wick
158704 Wick - Inverness
67007 Inverness - Edinburgh

I had been expecting 030 on the sleeper again, so was pleasantly surprised with another winner.

2005:
Got the gen that a required 57/3 was dragging out of Lime Street.
57308 Crewe - Liverpool
57315 Liverpool - Crewe

OK here's my offering for the 27th of August. But you'll all be bored of me leaping around the Midlands so here's what happened in 1982 when I was travelling back from London to my parents for the weekend
47227 Paddington to Reading
50038 Reading to Paddington
50033 Paddington to Oxford
47361 Oxford to Reading - absolutely massive with 361 being a Thornaby loco
50039 Reading to Bristol TM
And of course that gave me another 181 miles with Class 50s as an added bonus

Thornaby locos were always rare in my neck of the woods too, so when 47361 & 47346 (both TE 47/3s) turned up on summer Saturday trains one Saturday in 1986, I had to get them in. I seem to remember doing leaps between Thetford and March to get them both in. Typically about 4 years later 47346 became an Stratford civil engineers loco which meant that I had it several times during 1990 on various trips to Yarmouth and even on North Walsham - Norwich legs of railtours.

55013 - As luck would have it, 37254 turned up for me on a railtour from Exeter to Barnstaple in 1996, so in the end it was only 37197 that got away.

Just remembered that I did Basford Hall 1995 as well!

First train out of Norwich (158 units) to Peterborough, where I met a mate from Spalding, and we did another 158 to Nuneaton for 87004 up to Crewe. Fitted in a quick spin to Chester & back with 37414 & 37407 after the open day, before 47817 was done to New Street and then more 158 mileage back to Norwich

More August 28 memories

2000, Bank Holiday diverts on the ECML between Newark & Doncaster, Had 2 pairs of NOL Eurostars 3311/3312 & 3309/3310 and 47799 & 47733 on drags via the GE/GN joint.

This one’s a little different.
Looking through my remaining books and I came across 28/08/91:

25067 Ropley - Medstead substituting for a steam locomotive on the 11:15 Alresford - Alton.
I was living and volunteering there for the whole summer. Probably had a quiet moment and fancied a quick run out on it.
This was around the time that 27007 was nearing completion (ha!) and the 25 was doing a lot of work and being driven hard on the line.

Barrow - Home of the Bluebirds!!!
And diesel / electric changes would have taken place at Carstairs with Edinburgh portions. Plus Carlisle for anything to/from the Glasgow and South Western. I'm also young enough to remember traction changes at Preston with Liverpool and Barrow portions
I can still remember the Barrow loco-hauled too, we even had a sleeper service to Euston!

Good stuff, Barrowjack.
That's a move that looks very similar to sort of thing I was doing in the early 90s.
37414 was a monster :)

Yeah I managed 4 trips on that one. Looking back at my haulage book my moves were very similar around that time, obviously making the most of the loco hauled whilst I could. If only I could find my pre 1989 record books, as these would contain the good stuff. Would really like to confirm the date I had the privilege of a trip on the APT more than anything! Looking back now.

Anyway to todays humble little offering goes back to 1987, the highlight being a couple of No Heat 47's. Unfortunately I have no idea as to the services they were working as I didn't record minor details like that back then!

108xxx Barrow In Furness to Lancaster
86252 Lancaster to Preston
47140 Preston to Poulton Le Fylde
47200 Poulton Le Fylde to Preston
85002 Preston to Crewe
86217 Crewe to Stafford
85003 Stafford to Crewe
47531 Crewe to Chester
47590 Chester to Crewe
87013 Crewe to Preston
87023 Preston to Lancaster
108xxx Lancaster to Barrow In Furness

As for mileage - I'll tot it up some day but my highest mileage class is 50s with over 179k on the clock with one certain member of the class sitting on 8k and only one not cleared for 3k. Highest mileage units are the 319s with 164k on the clock, all cleared for at least 1k and 25 of them over 2k.

My highest mileage unit is currently the Pendolinos on 43k (only 18k properly recorded with unit numbers though) 156's next on around 10k though the 87's may rival this if I find the rest of my logs

Keep 'em coming, folks, this is great :)

As for individual class mileages, my highest loco type, perhaps unsurprisingly, is the class 47.
So far I've had 81033.79 miles on spoons.
Other notable ones are as follows:
Class 91 - 35396.13
Class 37 - 30198.78
Class 90 - 26094.04

Small amounts compared to many, but I'm reasonably happy with them.

I've also had 14639.15 miles on 158s, but I don't want to think about that ;)

Oh, and 4268.3 on 142s.
Eek.

If you hit 5000 off the 142s before they go there’s got to be some kind prize awarded.
1st - A pass to ride as many Pacers in a day as you can.
2nd - A two day pass to ride as many Pacers in a day as you can...

Yes, LSG, I am a 50 man through and through. 47s though also showing reasonably well although no match for 55013 - around 40k from memory. While I've had well over 450 different class 47s, there's still one around which I need. Must go and get it sometime

But I'd often take a break from the 50s in the summer in order to allow the good old red pen to stretch it's legs. Over the years, I have also dabbled a bit with bus bashing in London - no so serious these days but I do try to keep on top of my local garage (Sutton).

My high 319 mileage comes from nigh on 30 years of having them on the daily commute and them basically being the main traction on the Wimbledon Loop. But some of the early commutes from St Helier will feature all sorts - plenty of EPB action (and as we all know, EPB stands for Every Passenger Bounces and not something to do with the braking system!) and once we got to Wimbledon, any sort of main-line stock so HAPs, VEPs, CIGs and the rest all feature. The daily grind has also seen a major contribution to my 455 mileage.

However, a lot of my bashing was moderated once I met the lady who eventually became my wife (and 30 odd years later, we're still going strong) and as long as I make some time for her, the odd bashing session is tolerated but a lot of my "spare" time these days is spent dabbling with books.

Is it bad my 159 mileage is 45568 miles with currently 2 members of the class above 3000 miles, only 2 below 2000 miles?

(Those 72 miles & 49 chain trips to London soon add up, especially when it's a triple set)

Sadly as a youngster to the game, my logs only start in Jan 14 so it is mostly units.

Nobody is going to shout at you for your 159 mileage! Pretty commendable that you have a decent rack of runs with, in my opinion, one of the best DMUs currently running on the network (cannot stand their 158 cousins though) Even though I see 159s most days, my mileage is a lot lower with none over 500 and several still on double figures. I'm sure that my 159 mileage would be higher had the weekend free travel passes for South Western season ticket holders not been withdrawn

Saw an article in Rail that reminded me that its now 20 years since the open day at Toton. This formed the middle day of what was a decent weekend. I intended to cover the class 47 turns out of Yarmouth before meeting up with my mate Robert from Spalding and using his then-new house as a base for the weekend. However he phoned me on the Friday to tell me that 90029 (then in DB red) was on the KX-Leeds circuit, so I headed that way for some 90 thrash instead.

Moves were:
158844 NORWICH - PETERBOROUGH
90029 PETERBOROUGH - GRANTHAM
91014 GRANTHAM - PETERBOROUGH
91024 PETERBOROUGH - GRANTHAM
90029 GRANTHAM - PETERBOROUGH
153364 PETERBOROUGH - SPALDING

We made Spalding in time for the second half of the Spalding v Kempston UCL game as Robert was a keen "Tulips" fan, then it was off to Pinchbeck on an ex LT Leyland Titan for the evening. Will post day 2 tomorrow.

It's 1982 again!
Post 28 (for the 27th of August 1982) saw me bagging the massive 47361 en route to a couple of days with my parents in Bristol. On the 29th, 50005 did the honours of returning back to the smoke on the legendary 16:45 Plymouth-Paddington. This train was advertised non-stop from Taunton to Reading but ran via Bristol every Sunday and not only was it platformed but it was even announced. Perfect way for a 50 crank like me as it was almost solid 50. But today is the 30th, so here's what I did on Bank Holiday Monday back in 1982
50019 Waterloo-Basingstoke
73133 Basingstoke - Bournemouth
33103 Bournemouth - Weymouth Quay
My book says that the quay was required track. Then walked back into town
33110 Weymouth - Poole
33118 Poole - Bournemouth
3014 Bournemouth - Brockenhurst
7825 Brockenhurst - Lymington Pier
The pier was yet another piece of required track
7825 Lymington Pier - Southampton
47196 Southampton - Basingstoke
50009 Basingstoke - Waterloo

Not a bad day out with two bits of required track, two winners and another 95 odd class 50 miles. By then I was down to 6 class 73s and it would be 1986 before I would get another winning ED and 1987 before I cleared the class.

Update on post 40. Class 47 mileage was around 42k and I have 477 different members of the class logged

I'm glad to see this thread is going along nicely.
The trouble with the idea of a daily reminiscence is that I, for one, don't get the time to post something every day!

So, here's my pick of the moves from the 29th and 30th August.

1997:
A weekend that anybody over the age of twenty-five will almost certainly remember, and not because of the trains I travelled on.

It began on Friday the 29th with me picking a couple of mates up after work and driving up to Scotland.
We boarded a 156 at Arrochar & Tarbet.
The guard was most surprised when we purchased day returns to Bridge Of Orchy.
Then the penny dropped and he knew what we were doing.
The usual visit to the nearby pub was followed by:
37428 Bridge of Orchy - Arrochar & Tarbet

A night's kip in my car was endured, before an early drive towards Edinburgh.
We spent the day at the Bo'ness & Kinneil railway.

Locos enjoyed were:
27005 Bo'ness - Birkhill
20020 Birkhill - Bo'ness
27001/25235 Bo'ness - Birkhill
27005 Birkhill - Bo'ness
50021 Bo'ness - Birkhill
25235 Birkhill - Bo'ness
26004 Bo'ness - Birkhill
50021 Birkhill - Bo'ness
47643 Bo'ness - Birkhill
26004 Birkhill - Bo'ness
50021 Bo'ness - Birkhill
27001 Birkhill - Bo'ness
20020 Bo'ness - Birkhill
50021 Birkhill - Bo'ness
50021 Bo'ness - Birkhill
20020 Birkhill - Bo'ness
08443 Bo'ness - Birkhill
08443 Birkhill - Bo'ness

Why was this weekend memorable?
Well, after dropping my mate 45135 off I drove to Knottingley to drop my other pal off.
After that I made my way back onto the M62 and put the radio on.
Apparently; Diana, Princess of Wales, had been involved in a car accident in Paris, early indications were that she was fine.....

No famous deaths overshadowed the last day of my August 2002 all-line rover.
The 29th saw me starting aboard the Highland sleeper, behind 67007.
Then it was:
90016 Edinburgh - Euston
86260 Euston - Birmingham International
87029 International - Coventry
87025 Coventry - International
87002 International - Euston
87022 Euston - Crewe
47799 Crewe - New Street
87008 New Street - Euston
91107 Kings Cross - Wakefield

The 30th August 1990 saw me staying local.
47417 Wakefield - Leeds
31408 Leeds - Keighley
DMU Keighley - Leeds
47812 Leeds - Wakefield
HST or DMU Wakefield - Leeds
91012 Leeds - Wakefield
HST or DMU Wakefield - Leeds
91018 Leeds - Wakefield
47801 Wakefield - Leeds
31460 Leeds - Shipley
31450 Shipley - Leeds
DMU Leeds -Shipley
31207 Shipley - Leeds
47851 Leeds - Shipley

390124 New Street - Coventry
390125 Coventry - Crewe

I don't know why they used a pair of Skips, but the performance was impressive - they went like excrement off a shovel :)
I'd just started chasing DMUs that summer, hence all the winners.
The plan was to finish on the Fridays only Euston - Crewe via Birmingham as that was booked a 90.
Sadly, 390125 turned up instead; at least it was a winner.

Part 3 of the Bank Holiday move saw me off to catch the first Deltic-hauled trip for Anglia, which was meant to mark the introduction of through trains to Yarmouth with 170/2 Turbostars from May 1999, then back home via Peterborough to use up the return portion of the Norwich - Peterborough ticket purchased on the 29th

I was working in Nottingham at the time and to make any decent moves after work, it required a lift into town and a prayer that the traffic was light. Especially when you were aiming for the Harwich Boat Train
47168 Nottingham - Peterborough
31216 Peterborough - March
31309 March - Peterborough
47521 Peterborough - Doncaster
55009 Doncaster - Peterborough
I'll resume with 1 September sometime tomorrow

The tour went via the G&SW due to 87012 bringing the wires down on the WCML at Lockerbie (gen from http://www.sixbellsjunction.co.uk/).
Due to the delay the booked 56 from Carlisle was changed to a 90 in order to make up some time.

2006:
A nice day out with three round trips on 55022 at the ELR.

2007:
Another nice day out, this time at the other end of the motive power spectrum.
Three round trips on 03094 at the Cambrian Railway, Oswestry.

Great thread.

Like many on here, some records are missing. However some can be reconstructed, with the help of the interweb. :)

One of these for me was 31/8/84, dated thanks to a Class 25 old gen site, where I scored 25284 from Bolton to Manchester V on the loco-hauled Blackpool diagram.

Moving on 13 years, to the Diana-Demise-Day of 31/8/97, and I made my first ever visit to the North Yorks Moors Railway, with Black Five 45428 and WD "Dame Vera Lynn" providing the motive power.

More mundanely, 155342 turned up on my daily commute (Rochdale to Manchester) on 31/8/99.

Some great stuff there, chaps.
Keith - those 37 moves are jaw-dropping.
rg177 - that looks like just the sort of move I'd enjoy these days.

The pick of my 2nd September moves now.

1989:
Continuing our move on the "West Highlander number 7" tour.
In the early hours, 86252 gave way and we continued with:

5305 Mallaig - Fort William
37409 Fort William - Mossend Yard
86252 Mossend Yard - Wigan
47217 Wigan - Dewsbury

A photostop was made at Tulloch on the return - no problem with people swarming over an open line in those days:

When I read this Keith I was like, dear me (I'm paraphrasing there) look at this lot, all them 37s, what a joy that day was, I've had 3 maybe 4 in a day, normally summer Saturdays or a day trying to collar the QS-Fort Bill turns, certainly never 7 with a 40, a few 31s and a couple of 47s hoyed in for good measure, all kicked with a couple of Deltics too.
I bet you had a demented grin from ear to ear, I certainly would have.
That's an outstanding day on the rails.

Those moves of 55013 at the ELR gala look familiar - certainly had 26024 there. Probably went another day though, as it's not listed under 2/9.

In fact the only semi-interesting move that day was in 2008, when I went to a meeting in Birmingham - 220025 there, 220014 and back again. 155342 was also sampled on the commute that day, for a change!

I think 26024 might have had a short spell based at the Lancs.
In addition to the 2nd September move, I had it there in July 2006, July 2007 and November 2007.
I also had a couple of runs on it at the Worth Valley in June 2007.

I've not had it since 2007, so it's well overdue another entry in my haulage book!
