12th September 1980 saw me returning from London to visit my parents near Bristol
    50026 Paddington to Swindon
Nice fester at Swindon as I had espied the loco for the Fridays only steam heat or so I thought. Instead it showed up on the generator van set (a Mark 3 set with a generator van)
    47357 Swindon to Bath Spa
Not bad for what was a sort of mandatory move.

    Not bad at all :)

My moves for the 13th of September:

    1990
    47424 Leeds - Darlington
    47475 Darlington - Leeds

    2001
    91012 Wakefield - Kings Cross
    Tube to Liverpool St.
    86215 Liverpool St - Ipswich
    86217 Ipswich - Liverpool St
    Tube to Euston
    87025 Euston - Birmingham International
    47747 International - Paddington

    2002
Once again I was at the ELR.
This was when the line between Irwell Vale and Rawtenstall was closed after flooding had damaged a bridge.
To compensate for the loss of that bit of the route, trains terminated at Irwell Vale then ran back a mile and a half to "signal 30" before returning to Irwell Vale.
This filled the time that would otherwise have been spent festering there.
As there is no ability for a loco to change ends at Irwell Vale all services were top and tailed.
I won't list the full moves, but locos involved were 33117, 37197, 40145, D832 & 55016 (in Porterbrook purple) on no less than twenty-two runs.

    2003
Back at the ELR; Rawtenstall was accessible once more and Heywood had opened at the other end of the line. This was another event which saw Freightliner sending a few locos.
    D832 Bury - Heywood
    40135 Heywood - Bury
    27066 Bury - Ramsbottom
    40145 Ramsbottom - Bury
    66524 Bury - Rawtenstall
    66524 Rawtenstall - Bury
    47150 Bury - Rawtenstall
    47150 Rawtenstall - Bury
    66562 Bury - Rawtenstall
    66562 Rawtenstall - Bury
    D7076 Bury - Heywood
    40135 Heywood - Rawtenstall
    D7076 Rawtenstall - Bury

    2008
A different heritage line, The Battlefield.
    37227/37905 Shackerstone - Shenton
37905 Shenton - Shackerstone; it failed just outside the station and we were rescued by 20166 for the last few chains
    20166 Shackerstone - Shenton
    20166/37227 Shenton - Shackerstone
    47640 Shackerstone - Shenton
    47640 Shenton - Shackerstone
    31130 Shackerstone - Shenton
    37227 Shenton - Shackerstone
    20166 Shackerstone - Shenton
    20166 Shenton - Shackerstone
    33019 Shackerstone - Shenton
    33019 Shenton - Shackerstone

Now KJ 47357 is a real biggy, can't say I had that for haulage.
55013, riding the trans pennine turns. 47475 was a belting 47, was never a big fan of the trans pennine livery it adourned mind.
Again some cracking moves, jealous of the hydraulic action. Still on my bucket list a warship and hymek.

Having taken advantage of my parents' hospitality on the Friday evening, Saturday was set aside for bashing, especially as my parents were working for a fair part of the day.. Mum had a delivery to make in Bath so I cadged a lift. Starting off with an absolute whopper of a duff, the whole day went very well
47212 Bath Spa - Bristol TM
    37181 Bristol TM - Newport
    47377 Newport - Bristol TM
47256 Bristol TM - Bath Spa
    31170+31181 Bath Spa- Bristol TM
50029 Bristol TM - Weston Super Mare
50029 Weston Super Mare - Bath Spa
47235 Bath Spa - Bristol TM
    47226 Bristol TM - Taunton
    47418 Taunton - Bristol TM
and then the bus back to my parents' place
The original idea was to go 50 bashing but as you can see, the odd winner got in the way!

Back to 1986 and the second Network Day where you got the freedom of the NSE area for £4. Included in this was all the cross-country 47 turns and the 33s on the Portsmouth - Salisbury line.

    Moves were

    47605 Norwich - Ipswich
    86205 Ipswich - Colchester
    309604/606/618 Colchester - Liverpool St
Tube - Liverpool St - Paddington
    47549 Paddington - Reading
47599 Reading - Portsmouth via Wokingham & Guildford
    33021 Portsmouth - Salisbury
    50001 Salisbury - Basingstoke
    47454 Basingstoke - Reading
    47473 Reading - Oxford
    47556 Oxford - Reading
    4 VEP 7772 Reading - Waterloo
    Tube Waterloo - Liverpool St
    86205 Liverpool St - Ipswich
On getting to Ipswich I hopped off to view the loco change and saw that the driver was a mate of mine
He gave me the nod, and I climbed into the cab for:
    47582 Ipswich - Norwich

A memorable end to a memorable day

Wow 2 mega days in history there.
KJ some proper traction there, very nice one to start the day, some big 47s among that list too. Not sure if I had 47212, i know i had a few of your others, 47377 rocked up on a Yarmouth turn. 37181 was a nice one to snaffle in too, was that day out a summer Saturday by any chance?
AJM a very memorable day indeed finished off with a cab ride in a complete beast. The epitome of a SF 47, dominos and white roof, phwooaar. Nurse more tablets please!!!! Were the 47s still in Notwich-Liverpool st turns then too or were they from Cambridge or Kings Lynn? Excuse my ignorance.

LSG, yes it was the final summer Saturday on the Western Region. There would be a whole eight months to wait for most of the summer dated trains to recommence.
212 was an Immingham loco at the time and IM locos of any description were never refused as they were as rare as the proverbial rocking horse dung. 47212 was on the Oxford -Paignton which would normally come off of one of the commuter trains the previous evening so where did Old Oak get a big IM duff from?
377 was a Bescot loco in 1980 so not that rare on passenger - likewise 226 and 235 were both Canton machines so again, their forays onto summer dated trains were fairly common

47212 is one of the few on Keith's excellent move that I actually had, in fact it features in today's lists and was already dud then.
AJM580, that looks like a great day, ending with an outstanding memory.

Anyway, my rather less impressive moves for the 14th of September through the years include the following:

    2001
    47830 Paddington - Plymouth
    08410 Plymouth sleeper portion shunt.
    43063/43070 Plymouth - Camborne
    47709 Camborne - Paddington
    57601 Paddington - Exeter
    47709 Exeter - Truro
    47830 Truro - Paddington

    2002
Another day at the ELR with the following locos featuring:
    20087, 31435, 33117, 37197, 40135, 45135, 47212, 50015, 55016 & 66607.

    2014
On holiday in Devon; Mrs 13 and I were staying near Digby. We spent the day visiting a few seaside places but had time to visit a heritage vehicle event at the South Devon Railway.
    150243/143620 Digby & Sowton - Dawlish
    143619/150234 Dawlish - Newton Abbot
    43091/43015 Newton Abbot - Totnes
    On to the SDR
Steam 5542 Totnes Riverside - Staverton
    Steam 3205 Staverton - Buckfastleigh
    D2246 Buckfastleigh - Staverton
    09010 Staverton - Buckfastleigh
    122100 Buckfastleigh - Staverton
    33002 Staverton - Totnes Riverside
    43301/43357 Totnes - Exeter
    143620/150243 Exeter - Digby & Sowton

During Summer 1986, the 47s were doing London - Kings Lynn, plus the Ipswich - Norwich leg of trains from London

Thanks - I think the problem of lost notes is a common one.
There are many moves I did in the early 80s that I have no record of.

What I do have records of are the following moves.
    15th September 1987
A day around West Yorkshire, featuring runs on 47406/47411/47445 & 47448.

    2001.
47841 Paddington - Birmingham New Street
    86425 New Street - Stafford
    86226 Stafford - New Street
    47746 New Street - Reading
    43019/43128 Reading - Paddington
    Underground to Kings Cross
    91130 Kings Cross - Wakefield

Three years after this move HST power car 43019 was written off in the Ufton Nervert crash.

    2002.
Back at the ELR for a third consecutive day.
    Locos sampled today were D7076, 37197, 40135, D832, 45135, D1041 & 55016

    2013.
Another heritage line (September is always a good month for diesel galas) the NYMR.
    D1092 Pickering - Goathland
    D821 Goathland - Pickering
    D821 Pickering - Grosmont
    55009 Grosmont - Pickering
    55009 Pickering - Grosmont
    37264 Grosmont - Goathland
    D821 Goathland - Grosmont
    24061 Grosmont - Pickering

At this point I will take my leave of this thread for a couple of weeks as Mrs 13 and I are heading off on holiday in a few hours.
I hope to have plenty of moves to read about when I return :)

    47716 Exeter - Basingstoke,

Presumably another North west day ranger, puzzled by the 90043 move as to why it would stop at Leyland as presumably was an inter city service though as I recall an odd Preston to Birmingham New Street service served there? As is usual unit numbers were not recorded :frown:

31431 Barrow In Furness to Preston
    47844 Preston to Blackpool North
xxxxxx Blackpool North to Salford Crescent
1420xx Salford Crescent to Manchester Piccadilly
    86222 Manchester Piccadilly to Macclesfield
    86231 Macclesfield to Stockport
    1564xx Stockport to Crewe
37141 Crewe to Liverpool Lime Street
31460 Liverpool Lime Street to Wigan North Western
86222 Wigan North Western to Preston
    90043 Preston to Leyland
    1420xx Leyland to Preston
    90027 Preston to Lancaster
xxxxxx Lancaster to Barrow In Furness

    Returning home we had:

210001 Old Oak Common - Paddington

Honestly Keith you seem to have been pursued by 47/3s back then.

I think I only managed to get about four of the things back in the day.
I’ve picked up a couple of preserved ones since, but that section of the old Platform 5 is somewhat barren...

47309 was a popular one indeed, had about 40 of the 47/3s, many were pushed out on Summer Saturday turns in the North East. If the Yarmouth turn wasn't a 37, you could guarantee it would be a 47/3.
Off the top of my head, 47301, 302, 305, 309, 310, 312, 319, 372, 375, 377 and 379 were ones I roped in on a few summer turns in the North East. One of my faves was 47346, out of Peterborough to Redford. The first variant of the Railfreight grey livery, yellow cabs, red sole bar and dominoes. It was rammed too.

16 September 2017 was the day I went to Polesworth and the Brain of Birmingham quiz, as detailed in my trip reports thread.

Also found an anomoly in my records - have corrected a move in 2002 to show 175011 from Salford Crescent to Deansgate, rather than the non-existent 170011...

In the late 70s & early 80s, 47/3s (along with all the 47/0s that had no heating apparatus) were pretty common on passenger. It was only the Immingham and Thornaby ones that were really rare. Crewe and Bescot ones were as common as 47/4s in the summer months back then. About the only 47 hotspot that never seemed to have many visits by nb duffs was the North Wales Coast.

Any way, back to the time machine and 16th September 1978.
    Fast car Nottingham to Coventry
    310071 Coventry to New Street
Then joined the AC/DC tour and no, there were not any Aussie rockers on board even though some of their album titles were appropriate such as High Voltage and Highway to Hell
    84002 New Street to Stockport
    25204 Stockport to Manchester Piccadilly
    76013+76021 Piccadilly to Rotherwood
    76013+76021 Rotherwood to Piccadilly
    25131 Piccadilly to Stockport
    84002 Stockport to New Street
    310064 New Street to Coventry
    Fast car Coventry to Bristol
Winners all round, apart from the "fast car". And I think this is the first Class 76 haulage to appear in OTDIH

There were a couple of turns during summer 1988 that bought Tinsley 47/0s and 47/3s down.
First 76 mentioned and possibly class 84 too? Or has an 84 come up already?

    16/9/91, 18/9/91 and 19/9/91:
This week 27 years ago found me racking up the miles behind the Mid Hants Railways finest... BR black liveried 08288, on the hedge cutting flailing train at the extraordinarily face bending speed of... 0.5 mph.
This involved a chap called Pat Bell driving the 08 as slowly as possible while a local farmer sat in his tractor on a well wagon and trimmed all the hedges with his tractors flail attachment.
My job was to keep the whole caboodle going as slowly as possible, which involved sitting in the brake van and winding the hand brake on and off.
My formal training consisted of: “Don’t wind the brake on so hard that the wheels lock up, and don’t forget your sandwiches”...
At least 25 miles behind (and in the cab once we’d finished for the day) the wee beast that week.
I probably wouldn’t have even revisited it if it wasn’t for this thread.
    Happy times.
