Hi Chap,

There are both Cl315's and Cl317's away for refurbishment, which means we're a little short of stock. On the WA side, we've got permanent Cl315 substitution on a number of Cl317 diagrams until they've all been done.

To make matters worse, the company has started putting back some of the services on the WA side that they had to remove from last December's timetable. Therefore, what stock we have is being spread that little bit more thinly.

I wonder if they are regretting getting rid of the 312s from GE. With CDL and TPWS and they would have been good for a few more years. Then again, Angel could have made some money off them if they had held onto a few rarther than selling the whole lot for scrap in one go. It's always amusing, but sad at the same time, to think that the GE 312s were newer than some of the Mk3s 'one' are now running, and were introduced on the GN Outer Suburban services over a year after the 313s started on the Inner Suburbans. None of them even got to 30 years old, most being nearer to 25 years old when withdrawn. Of cource, had BR specified them with sliding doors, I'm sure there would be no questions about them still running today, probably being withdrawn around the same times as the 313s and similar types.

Yeh sadly the 312's were "dinosaurs" when they were built. Very similar to some of the latest (mid-70's) VEPS.
The first 313 was built before the last 312 was completed, so if the 312 had sliding doors, there is no doubt they would be still working. It seems really stupid that they didn't really, when you think of 303's / 311's (which had sliding doors), which were built about 15 years before the 312 (and then of course theres the 306's built just after the war with sliding doors!! But that said, It is a fact that sliding doors ease congestion at terminals (as people could get off as the train slows down - so there wasn't a crush- as there is today when the sliding doors release). That is probably the reason BR specified them with slam-doors, but didn't anticipate the Health & Safety b*locks that the future would bring!

Talking about 312's - wasn't there a time in 2004 when the 360 availabiltiy was so bad that they had to drag a couple of 312's from Pigs Bay and press them into service for a couple of days!? I imagine now the units left at Shoeburyness (if any?) have deteriorated too much to be brought back at such short notice (as 312 must have been fitted with TWPS, as otherwise they would have had to be withdrawn in 2003, they also must have had AFFF fire extinguishers fitted (replacing Halon) as that rule also came in during 2003) - but obviously no CDL unfortunately.

You are thinking of the time when the entire Class 360 fleet had to be withdrawn owing to some problem (can't remember what). There were still a few 312s in service (which had TPWS) but most were at Pigs Bay and non-TPWS fitted. A solution to reinstating some units was found by putting two non-TPWS sets with a TPWS fitted unit, but reformed so that the two driving cars of the TPWS set were the outer vehicles in the 12-coach formation.
