Thanks - that would be the date, a couple of weeks before electric working was introduced between Crewe and Preston.

And I was sitting in 87 001. I now remember I was surprised at the time that this new loco was not numbered E3200, this being at the very start of the TOPS renumbering scheme.

Great link to the open days but there's no mention of Glasgow works in the early 80s it definitely happened as I attended!

I did Carlisle Kingmoor. then Coalville and then Bescot.

Kingmoor must have been mid 70's. Coalville must have been 1979 or 1980 ish. Bescot must have been late 80's cos I had the youngest nipper not in a pushchair and he was born 1983!

Kingmoor was good. They had an 87 on a pt so you could go underneath, and you could also get in the cab.
Ken H is a Cl87 fan....

If you currently look on Ebay and search for Shildon, you will find some very good photographs of the 1976 celebrations open day at Shildon. The photographs were taken with a medium format camera so the quality is good
