Any advice for the best ticket for a 25 day return on atwick to Orrell or Wigan NW and returning to Heathrow??

If you don't mind sitting around at the airport on return, probably Advances. Either that or split at London with an off peak return from Euston and separate tickets (contactless?) for the other bits.

I would agree and if you are travelling in the next couple of months this will be the fog or even snow season so it may provide more flexibility if the flight back is delayed/diverted.

IME Advances on the Wigan route arent much cheaper than Offpeak fares.

Depending on your arrival time at LGW, an Offpeak return may be your best bet (plus Contactless out to Heathrow on the return) and there is no morning peak restriction into London, only out of Euston.

Will an off peak return from Gatwick be valid via Reading and Oxford or Brompton Road and Watford J, with the option of finishing short, so only requiring a small additional tube fare to get to Heathrow on the return?

How about getting a Crewe to Euston walk up ticket with WMT and then using contactless from Euston to/from Gatwick.

Valid via West Brompton, so you'd save a small amount on the tube fare.
Not sure about via Paddington and Reading, but if it is, the OP would only need the fare from Hayes (isnt the 140 bus cheaper?).
However, I am not sure whether the OP wants the cheapest possible route. If they do, then the LNWR-only fares from Crewe suggested by gray1404 are probably part of the answer.
