Hi All, I have been following threads for a while but this is my first time posting. I have been invited for my DMI on Friday at Orpington ( for Orpington ) it was a bit short notice and only have a week to prepare. I’m learning the TPWS worksheet and preparing answers based on the job description, company values etc
I’ve researched current projects, refurbished stations, volume of passengers transported, revenue generated and amount of staff employed but really struggling to find out information on the actual depot and I hate to say it but understanding the lines as I don’t really use the train :(. Also when looking through the forum there is loads of example questions but I can’t get my head around all the abbreviations.
what is the definition of a metro line? What’s the deference between metro, mainline and high speed? TLK and GTR? What is a TOC? What is MTR?
what’s the difference between a managed and served station?
Any help would be much appreciated

So metro is primarily local stopping services, mainline is services further out and down to the coast, high speed is what it says, the high speed like to st pancras.
Toc means train operating company.
Abbreviations for train companies are common, so Southeastern is known as SE, thameslink as TL or TLK etc.
Don't get too hooked up on the lines, as long as you get a broad idea of the areas they cover and major stations etc you'll be fine

Don’t mean to hijack the thread, but when you get to DMI stage, are they still trying to catch you out and whittle down numbers or do they want you to succeed at that point?

At no point are they trying to catch you out?
You either meet the standard or you don't.
The dmi is a more mature chat with managers and will focus on you and your knowledge of the company etc, less like a test but they will still be assessing you especially your character.

OK, wrong choice of words there. What I mean is, if you meet the standard, will you get a place in the pool or are they still cutting numbers. If I'm honest, I didn't find the assessments that challenging so I'd imagine there Is quite a lot of people that make it through to DMI stage?

On my assessment day, 6 started - 1 made it through to the end. Not sure if that's a standard kinda day, mind.

DMI is a lot more relaxed than what you are expecting. I went to mine expecting to be grilled, but it really wasn’t like that, building a good rapport in the initial stages of the interview is so important and will really have an effect on how you will be questioned and also maybe what questions you will be asked!

I agree Lewis. I've had interviews in other industries and the interviewers acted like robots. For one particular blue chip company, they didn't raise a single smile.

My DMI at Southeastern was the complete opposite. But don't let your guard down and do make sure you're fully prepped.

Good luck.

I have been told by other people that I am over worrying and that at this stage it’s more about rapport and I get what you was kinda saying MistaMatthews that by the time you get to the DMI they want you they are just waiting for you to give them a reason not to get the job rather than trying to catch you out ( which is also what I’ve been told ) BUT I can’t go into it thinking that Especially as I heard so many people don’t pass the DMI’s so I’m trying to be as prepared as possible and not just rely on my amazing personality hahahahaha... thanks for all the help I’ll try to relax ( just a little bit)

You are too tense and desperate, relax and take onboard the advice of people who have passed very recently, you'll be fine.

Remember you are good enough to get this far and It may help psychologically to also flip the table and think that as much as they are assessing you, you are also assessing them.

Indeed I agree with the above, I only had 3 days to prepare properly for mine then had technical difficulties with my laptop. They did everything to make me feel relaxed it was without fail the best interview I have ever experienced.
