350404 has pulled the wires down just off the north end of platform 4 at Carlisle causing all manner of problems as it looks like north bound access to the station is limited to p1 plus diesel only services are passing northbound

That should read allegedly pulled the wires down - such incidents are normally subject to a formal inquiry to check whether it was a pantograph fault or OLE fault. TPE will not want to accept responsibility just yet!

Fair enough - I saw a train just off the end of the platform with no pantograph visible and assumed that to be the cause - I suppose something else may have caused the incident

Was that the one that was making those weird noises leaving stations?
If it was it certainly was not healthy then.

NRE were reporting it as overhead wire issues at Carlisle - issue now cleared but with disruption until the end of service

Looking at RTT, it seems everything that isn't terminating from the south is going into platform 1 - this seems to be including NB and SB mainline services and, just now, the terminator from Dumfries (so it must be blocking access to that bay too)

Something does appear to have gone through p3, but not particularly recently

Oh yes, it was! We did comment yesterday that it didn't sound too healthy, didn't we!

Don't know what caused it but the Network Rail guys had the bolt cutters out to presumably remove wire wrapped around the pantograph

Seemed to have sat down there, blocking a Scotrail 156 in platform 7.

Northern unit 156451 was used to rescue the passengers from the 350 and bring them into platform 4.

I left the station about 4.20 and a few services had come through 3 and passed the stranded unit so not sure why it's not being used anymore.

Quite the failure indeed. Did the OHLE power have to be isolated to the entire station for the work to be carried out to sort the panto? Naturally looking at the picture of the orange army on the roof of the train, something would be isolated, but what extent was the affected area?

Don't know, there weren't any electric trains in the Station for a long period either side of the NR guys being by the train. They attached clips over other parts of the train so can't have been that large an area affected.

Just gone back down to the station and Network Rail have been on the line again alongside 350404 explains why everything has been through platform 1.

Freightliner 66 just heading through platform 4 now towards the 350

Carlisle had a very good OLE team "handy" in my day - looks as if they are still around.

As a matter of interest, how often are the Pantographs and associated equipment checked for wear and tear on the FTPE Class 350s?

About the same as any pantograph frankly - on booked depot exams - and there are things called "panchex" on various rates which moniter passing trains.

Old school types like me always watch pans and bogies / 3d rail pick gear on non stop trains - always taught to "observe" trains professionally - and never turn your back on a train you have despatched from a yard or platform.

66596 has coupled up to the 350 but contact wire over them looks to have sagged onto the 66, various orange men have been down to have a look at it, with no further movement of loco or unit so far.

They look to be terminating everything at Carlisle now, northbound 185 was platformed into bay 6 and southbound 350 has arrived and not left with Scotrail 156 being worked in behind it on platform 1

The 185 in pl 6 must be fairly uncommon!

If the 350 has been held in p1, it sounds like power could be isolated to the entire station area?

Presume so, more network rail guys arrived and started to look at the OHLE from track level.

Sun has set so calling it quits for the night, wonder if they'll still be there in the morning.

I should hope not - if that lot isn't sorted overnight, there will be surely hell to pay in the morning!

I imagine that there will be some problems with the Caladonian sleeper tonight then.

Well RTT shows that the 350 has finally departed to looks like things are moving again.
Are the sleepers limited in which platforms they can use at Carlisle?

As long as one of the routes is live they should be okay.
--- old post above --- --- new post below ---
Carlisle is a crew change stop as far as I know so it shouldn't be a problem.

I often find myself looking at the wires in a station just to check that all the clips are on - and I don't even work for the railway...

    Taken from another website.

With the overhead problems in the carlisle area, all four beds trains will be dragged upperby to kingmoor
