Is it possible still to change between National Rail paper tickets and Oyster (or the other way round) without having to go through the gatelines? If I recall there were some Oyster card readers located around the station/platforms? Will can these be used for both entry and exit in terms of starting or finishing an Oyster journey.

Those are funny places to put them. Somewhere on platforms 1/2 would help a huge load of passengers.

Passengers on platforms 1/2 are likely to be in the middle of an Oyster journey. If they need to indicate that they've changed there then there are pink validators for that purpose. If they have come in from outside Oysterland then the exit gates next to platform 1 are not too far away.

The balance that has to be made is between convenience for passengers who genuinely want to switch between Oyster and paper while not making it too easy for long distance passengers to dumbell/doughnut etc.
