Just seen that something has derailed outside paddington - fire/rescue in attendance, nothing leaving the station, obvious massive disruption.

It's a "problem under investigation" according to NRE: http://www.nationalrail.co.uk/service_disruptions/today.aspx
A problem is currently under investigation at London Paddington, causing disruption to trains to and from this station. Trains are expected to be delayed or revised

PS
If it hasn't been used before, it looks like the new bay at West Ealing (P5) is getting used because of the disruption, according to RTT.

GWR website
Due to a derailed train between London Paddington and Reading some lines are closed.
Impact:
Train services running to and from these stations may be delayed or revised. Disruption is expected until 22:15 16/06.
Customer Advice:
An empty train has derailed in a siding outside London Paddington station. This has resulted in damage to infrastructure which means that we are unable to operate the full train service between Slough and London Paddington until further notice.

GWR say its in a siding, this looks like its over around P1-4 what siding is over there?

Announcements at Reading seem to be a mix of "Due to a derailed Train" and "A Problem under Imvestigation". Either way nothing's leaving heading Eastwards into Paddington at the moment.

The line from the very end of P1 extends through a set of points into a 'link line' to two sidings, they sit on the south side of running line 1 for about ¼ mile.

(Composed while causton found the above drawing. Grrrr...)

Would that unit probably have been used for the Greenford branch? What's the speed limit where it derailed? Presumably it's given the gantry support a fair whack for the gantry to have come down

Was going to form part of a train to Henley-on-Thames. 25mph. Its derailed on the catch points coming off the Link Line.

Quoting the BBC who in turn are quoting Network Rail is pretty low on the speculation scale, surely?

No it's just not nice I feel to speculate that's all after all we know how the press can get things wrong sometimes that's all didn't mean to start a argument

HST derailed on the same catch points about 12 years ago IIRC

I think the mods are usually quick to discourage rampant speculation, but it's a public forum - people can and will post their questions.

Is there anything so wrong in informed speculation? Network Rail have already told us there was a SPAD.

Really only three possibilities. Driver error, signaller error, infrastructure fault.

Would the sidings be equipped with AWS/TPWS/ATP?

Unlikely. Turbos only work with TPWS/AWS, and AWS is irrelevent in this case. Signals controlling exit from sidings with trap protection are not considered to represent a high risk of collision so would not get a TPWS trainstop normally. The traps did their job and derailed the SPAD train away from running lines, but unfortunately the electrification structure was in it's path after it left the rails and that damage was probably mostly to blame for the subsequent disruption.

Is this the little bit thats left of the old "engine only" line that formed an up-and-over for locos to access old oak common without blocking the station throat. Also wasnt there some sort of goods/parcels platform along this stretch?

Facebook and another Forum say Cat A SPAD at SN6004. If the info is available elsewhere in the public domain, are we speculating ?

There installing questions then there is gossiping and spreading rumours. At end ofndaybthisnis why we have the hmri/raib to do there investigation it's what there paid for the armchair investigators are quick to come out with ASSUMPTIONS and this is how rumours start. Let the real investigators do there job. How would you like it if you made a big error init place of work that affected others and people starting making speculations about what you done to be totally different to what actually happened as they were not there to see what you done. Works both ways end of the day we were not there so can't say what happened or why that's down to te investigators and the driver and staff involved to discuss not on a public forum

I dont know Paddington at all, but I assume they will have to remove overhead lines to get a crane in to lift and rerail the train ??
