I'd love to work out how to get such effects. recently bought a canon 550d so still getting my head round that at the moment

That image was taken on a Canon Powershot A480 compact.

Basically on your DSLR you'd set exposure to 10 seconds, ISO down lown and go for it. Another good way of learning is on Flickr where they show you the model of the camera that's taken the picture. If you click on the camera name it brings up all the settings used for that shot.

Sort of an ex-childhood rail enthusiast who still likes to keep informed about the railways.
